It seems Gearbox is already prepared to ramp up its showcasing of Borderlands 4. At Sony’s State of Play showcase, which debuted a slew of trailers with new and other upcoming games, Gearbox dropped a release date trailer that shows off some of the action of the franchise’s next big title.
The mayhem is coming shockingly soon, with the official release date now unveiled as September 23, 2025.
But the trailer isn’t just a pretty date—it’s essentially the first lengthy chunk of combat gameplay that we’re seeing from the upcoming looter-shooter action game. It shows off the usual bloody mess of Borderlands action we’re used to, with a preview of a variety of weapons as well as enemies and environments in the classic style of the franchise.
Apparently that wasn’t enough gameplay for Gearbox to show, though, as the description for the video explains that the “full Borderlands 4 gameplay reveal will debut during a State of Play coming later this spring.” More than likely, that means we’ll get more formal information about the game.
We’re also left with a teaser of the plot: “Break free from the oppressive Timekeeper, a ruthless dictator who dominates the masses from on high,” the site and video description explain. “Now, a world-altering catastrophe threatens his perfect Order, unleashing mayhem across the planet.”
Will this one be worth the not-so-long wait for long-time Borderlands fans?
