Borderlands 4 has been officially announced, with a 2025 release date, per a new teaser at Gamescom.
The trailer doesn’t show much, but Gearbox/2K already has a Steam page online, which lists that it’ll be a “looter shooter” with solo play and online co-op, including cross-platform play.
Plus, the Borderlands series itself carries quite a legacy and set of expectations with it. Borderlands is an onslaught of gag humor and gory, absurd gameplay that’s somehow all edgy, goofy, dark and upbeat at once. The protagonist grunts his way through interactions with a memorable series of characters and storylines that are both over-the-top and, in a rare moment or several, emotionally resonant.
Borderlands has also mixed up its recipe over the years. While its capacity for both solo play and co-op ups its replayability, new titles often bring new events, loot styles, gameplay modes and more to lock in players throughout the games’ lifespans.
Unfortunately, Borderlands has lost the wind in its sails for the past few weeks, as its self-titled Hollywood movie adaptation faces a financial and critical flop moment. To speculate for fun, chances are the trailer and general announcement was supposed to coincide with the movie, so that’s unfortunate.
