With the Overwatch 2 PVP beta currently in limited access and coming to the public in April, Blizzard is now detailing the ping system that will becoming to the game.

The ping system is a requested feature that they're finally going to make a reality and the Overwatch team is coming from a stated goal to give players options for communication. “We wanted to create a system that would enhance voice communication as well as provide alternative ways to share information with your team," according to systems designer Gavin Winter. "We also wanted to support all voices and create a system to communicate fpr players that would prefer to avoid voice chat," he added.

The ping system will add context to what you can hear in the voice chat  An example given is that if you have Tracer ping an enemy Reaper, she will then call out that Reaper's location, without you the player having to voice any of that information yourself. And it will be a clear and direct form of communication instead of just someone yelling about an enemy Reaper. Of course, with such an active game, a thing that is in your line of sight right now might not be there in a moment, but the ping will show the last known location to your teammates.

If you ping a fellow hero, this works similarly because while your hero is visible, you'll be able to see exactly where they are but if the clear uses something that renders them not visible or moves them, like Tracer’s Recall, it will show their last known location. You can only place one ping at a time, so you'll have to be careful and selective because if you try to place another your first will disappear immediately.

This system will also let you indicate different things because the ping button will open a wheel that you can use to contextualize exactly the information you want to convey. You can use it to tell your group where to meet up, you can ping yourself if you need healing,  and additional options.

The community is already weighing in with feedback and the team will consider changes to the system for individual heroes or overall if they need to.
