"Unprecedented" DDoS attacks led to a new approach

When you choose to roll a character on a hardcore server, you know if you die, that's it. Whether you tumble down a mountain or disconnect, that's the end. However, World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore players may be getting a potential reprieve under very specific circumstances.

Clay Stone, WoW Classic’s Associate Production Director addressed a series of recent “unprecedented” DDoS attacks being targeted to disrupt players' experiences, and the cost on Hardcore is everything.

“Unlike the many other ways characters can die in Hardcore, DDoS attacks are an intentionally malicious effort made by third-party bad actors, and we believe the severity and results of DDoS attacks specifically warrant a different response.”

This opens the door just a little bit, under these very specific limited circumstances that Blizzard may consider reviving Hardcore characters that died as a result of an intentional mass event like a DDoS attack. This doesn't change other policies on death appeals or character restorations, so if your character perishes in a server disconnect, you're still out of luck.
