Blockchain party MMO Blankos Block Party is poised to make some changes in the near future. Released in September 2022, this figure collecting, hub-based party game MMO will finish out Season 4, before it rolls out a new ongoing “live event” that will shift how players earn rewards. Unfortunately for the team at Mythical, the player base has not warmed to the idea that the Mobile port is taking precedent over the PC.
Blankos Block Party has made some strides over the past few years. As a character collector NFT game, with multiple collaborations with high value intellectual properties, and the first NFT game to be listed on the Epic Games Store, it seemed as though Mythical Games had everything going for it. However, in a recent interview with Pocket Gamer, the team stated that the mobile version is not going to be a port of Blankos Block Party but rather that this is an “evolution” of what Blankos is supposed to be, and that they anticipate PC players will transition to mobile.
With that said, the team has been adamant that they believe players will be able to bring all of their assets they’ve earned with them, so nothing is lost, though with the sunsetting of their Season Pass, it’s clear that the developers at Mythical are making a clear distinction that Season 4 will be the “last hurrah” for the game before it loses support.
A lot is left unanswered for players, as "partiers" still wonder what will happen to their “Blankos Bucks” and in-game currency that can be used to purchase accessories and Blankos in the game. There are also additional questions as to what levels will transition to the mobile game as well. Many players have spent hours building unique levels for the community to play in, with user generated content being a primary draw for community involvement. Whether those levels will be ported over somehow, or whether they will become inaccessible to the mobile population, has yet to be answered. This comes hot on the heels of the departure of their Senior Level Designer for the game, which makes much more sense now that the development is transitioning to mobile.
The community has, justifiably been unhappy with this announcement. Many players have spent hundreds of hours building, collecting and playing a PC version that was expected to be supported for many years, especially when the investment in the collectible items correspond to real money. What will happen to the price of their assets if they aren’t supported in the mobile version? What happens if the transfer process isn’t available on launch of mobile and players won’t have access to their assets when mobile launches?
Many players in the Blankos Block Party Discord have expressed their eroding trust for Mythical Games. Some have opted to attempt to cash out whatever assets they have now to receive any return they can, while others have decided to wait until the mobile release to hopefully see a resurgence in the prices of their assets. Either way, the decision to essentially phase out the PC version of the game has not sat well with the community, but as this transition intensifies, we will keep our ears to the ground for additional news related to Blankos Block Party.
