Black Myth: Wukong, the hotly anticipated action-adventure game from Chinese studio Game Science, launched on PC and PlayStation 5 today, and in doing so, it broke concurrent player records, eclipsing Cyberpunk 2077 in the process.
An action RPG steeped in Chinese mythology, Black Myth: Wukong follows the story of the Destined One. Based on the Chinese novel Journey to the West, the Destined One must overcome obstacles, epic boss fights, and more to learn more about his past.
It seems players couldn't wait to jump into Black Myth: Wukong when it launched, and within a few hours of going live on Steam, the action game eclipsed 2.2 million concurrent players, topping out at 2,223,179 concurrent players on the PC platform. This obviously doesn't include the players who hopped into Wukong on PlayStation 5, which also launched today.
The concurrent player numbers brought Black Myth: Wukong beyond the heights set CDPR's Cyberpunk 2077 (which held the record at 1,054,388 concurrent players), though at the time of writing those numbers are down to a more modest 275K (though as people get off of work today, they will likely continue to climb back up).
As of the time of writing, Black Myth: Wukong currently sits fourth among the most-played games on Steam, eclipsing the likes of PUBG: Battlegrounds in the process. It'll be interesting to see how much higher this number climbs as we head towards the weekend as more and more people are freed up to play the single-player hit.
We're hard at work on our own review of Black Myth: Wukong, and will have it as soon as we can.
