Bigpoint Exec: "If they want to pay, don't just offer hats"

Bigpoint Chief Games Officer Philip Reisberger has some interesting news for the likes of EA, Valve and Ubisoft: They're not doing monetization of their games correctly.

In an interview with Edge, Reisberger says that in-game items should help players, not just be fluff items. Using Bigpoint's stable of free to play games as an example, Reisberger indicates that most of their customers do not pay a dime for their games but those who want to pay should get something beneficial out of the transaction:

"In a nutshell, EA doesn't understand it," he adds, referring to EA's insistence that a Battlefield 3 pre-order bonus containing advanced weaponry would not give players a competitive advantage. "It wouldn't ruin the game. If selling an advantage ruins the game, you haven't done the balancing right…EA and Ubisoft, for example, they're both trying, but they're not really there yet.
