Battle Royale Players are More Engaged Gamers According to NewZoo

NewZoo has published a fascinating new study about battle royale players as compared to "core competitive gamers (CG)", those who play Overwatch, Rocket League, Hearthstone, etc. The study focused on gamers between the ages of 10-65 in 16 countries. Findings suggest that battle royale players "are more engaged gamers, spending larger amounts of time gaming on both console and PC".

Some interesting takeaways:

  • 80% of BR players watch gaming live streams compared to 60% of general competitive gamers
  • 35% of BR players donate to streamers or broadcasters as compared to only 22% of CG
  • Fortnite is the most-watched game on Twitch and YouTube
  • Ninja is the most-watched streaming channel on Twitch
  • 40% of BGers play both Fortnite and PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
  • Fortnite players "skew younger" with 68% between 10-30 (over PUBGs 60%)
  • PUBG players tend to be employed full time (68% over Fortnite's 50%)

When it comes to esports, a slightly larger share of PUBG players is watching it several times per month. Interestingly, PUBG is not the most regularly watched esport by PUBG players, which may be explained by the newness of PUBG as a competitive title in comparison to long-established titles, such as League of Legends. Both Fortnite and PUBG players regularly watch live-streamed video game content, but PUBG players are considerably more likely to stream themselves – 49% versus 36%.  PUBG players are also more engaged with the gaming community, with nearly two-thirds visiting online gaming community websites weekly in comparison to 55% of Fortnite players.
