Battle Aces, a new RTS by a former Starcraft 2 multiplayer dev, was announced at Summer Game Fest, with an animated trailer and a brief explainer by that ex-Blizzard developer.
The Summer Game Fest trailer has a neat accompanying anime style that doesn't do much for the gameplay, but does create some pretty cool hype for mech- and robot-centered gameplay. After all, who doesn't love explosions?
After showing the trailer, David Kim, a former lead on Starcraft 2's multiplayer mode (which was about 99% of why people played), explained more of Battle Aces' intent while showing off more of the actual gameplay to come. As explained by Kim, Battle Aces is an "action-packed army-versus-army game that has a high emphasis on the strategy." Uncapped Gaming hopes to make it the "RTS game for everyone," targeting both newcomers and veterans by bringing "only the fun parts of playing an RTS."
It'll have a deeper out-of-game strategizing focus than other well-known RTS games through the use of "Unit Decks," which helps players form their army before they set their armies onto the battlefield, as opposed to pre-defined "army" styles (i.e., Zerg, Terrans, and Protoss). The new RTS will also "eliminate the tedious clicks" that make games like Starcraft 2 infamous.
A press release to MMORPG gets more into the nitty-gritty, describing that its user interfaces will require less flicking back and forth between the action and home bases.
"In-game, Battle Aces delivers a combination of design innovations such as automated resource gathering, instant unit-spawning, and preset expansions that keep players focused on the fun of controlling and maneuvering massive armies in battle, even as they manage the moment-to-moment strategic decision making of when to expand to new bases, and when to tech for more powerful units," the release explains. "User interface innovations allow players to quickly swap between unit production and army control on-the-fly, without the need to look at home base or manage production facilities."
The release and official site also tout a 10-minute match limit, as opposed to older RTS' often-sprawling unlimited timers that forced players to go to their bases' death.
Battle Aces will have a PC beta soon, with sign-ups available now on its website; more information will be available at the PC Gaming Show, according to that site.
