With the launch of Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden just under two weeks from release, we’re seeing more details about the action RPG. This time, Focus Entertainment and Dontnod released a “Gameplay Breakdown Trailer” that goes into a little more detail about Banishers’s major gameplay elements.
Banishers’s gameplay is integrated with the game’s ghost-hunting theme and story. In Banishers, two ghost hunters are separated by one’s death, turning one into a life-feeding specter—and forcing them to make difficult choices about love and sacrifice. Some elements of the gameplay were shown in a prior gameplay trailer, but this new one sprawls out and fills in some gaps.
The new Banishers video goes into a little more detail about the setting. New Eden is part of a “cold, ruthless North America,” and visually it seems set in the mid- to late-1800s. Settlers have moved into this area amongst specters, taking up the help of Banishers, who can feel and affect the veils between the living and dead, to hunt the undead and protect the living. From here, the video retreads the overarching choice-making premise: help the living, or take their souls to preserve Antea, the now-dead hunter of the two.
Combat details in this breakdown answer some more questions players may have about the systems, though. Specifically, the game shows off the on-the-fly mid-combat swapping between protagonists Red and Antea. It appears this swapping will allow players to tap into both Red’s physical abilities and weaponry, and Antea’s magic-based abilities—both of which intertwine, especially as you upgrade Antea’s skill trees.
The trailer also gets a little more into both of their special skill sets, with finishers by Red and magical exploration and combat skills through Antea. For Antea’s abilities, though, players will need to take the souls of the living—and as we’ve learned, this may have consequences.
Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden is set to release on PC, Playstation and Xbox on September 13th.
