Baldur's Gate 3 Really Struggles With Performance In Act 3 On PlayStation 5

In a new video by tech wizards Digital Foundry, the team there broke down the performance and visuals of Larian's port of Bladur's Gate 3 to the PlayStation 5. And while it's mostly good, Act 3 really proves to be a breaking point.

The new video (and article) by Digital Foundry breaks down the visuals and performance of the PS5 port of Baldur's Gate 3, and for much of it, it's pretty uplifting. According to DF, the port doesn't seem to skimp on detail, pushing the ultra preset from the PC across to Sony's console.

Baldur's Gate 3 on PlayStation 5 also supports a Quality and Performance mode, the latter of which targets 60 frames per second. And, for much of the earlier parts of the experience, it hits that. Both modes target 1440p, which is then upscaled to 4K on the device, though the Performance mode is upscaling from an even lower rendered resolution: 960p.

However, Act 3, which takes place in Baldur's Gate proper, shows a very different experience, with Digital Foundry highlighting the CPU bottleneck in the machine.

Performance mode comes no where close to the 60fps target, oftentimes hovering in the mid-to-low 20fps range while also dealing with massive bouts of screen tearing to keep up with the game. Quality mode isn't much better, though it does at least come without the screen tearing.

The full video is worth a watch, especially if you're on the fence about buying Baldur's Gate 3 right out the gate on the console. With Larian's updates to PC coming quickly in the weeks since its launch last month, it stands to reason that some of these issues could be ironed out in future patches.

And for those reading this and asking where our review is at - well, stay tuned this week.
