Baldur’s Gate 3 will release on August 31st on PC, PlayStation 5, and Mac. Larian Studios announced the date with a new trailer, featuring actor J.K. Simmons as the voice of newly-revealed antagonist, General Ketheric Thorm.
The new trailer, released during Sony’s State of Play event today, takes us into Thorm’s plans. He is a necromancer that could be invincible. Or not. He seeks to recapture something that he had lost, and to gain absolute power. Well, you have allies, which he doesn’t. In August, we'll have a chance to learn more.
Still, with the reveal of this antagonist and a taste of his plans, along with distinctive voice work from an acclaimed actor, he stands out.
“Ketheric’s plans for the people of Faerûn are as complex as his motivations, and so we knew his role would benefit from the kind of depth and gravitas that renowned character actor J.K. Simmons could provide,” reads Larian’s devblog on the launch info and new trailer. There’s even a behind the scenes look at Simmons voicing the character.
Even with all of that, General Thorm is not the only antagonist in Baldur’s Gate 3. He’s one of the three main antagonists you’ll have to face. The other two will be revealed at a later date.
Other reveals from today’s event reveals include looks at split-screen co-op and controller support at launch. Baldur's Gate 3 will also support cross progression between platforms. so you can start on your PC and then sit down and play some more on your PlayStation 5. The team also mentions Steam Deck, so expect portability too.
There will be a digital deluxe edition at launch, and if you've already bought Baldur’s Gate 3 to support Early Access on PC, you'll get a free upgrade to that for lunch. on the dev blogs for today's announcements, they've included the difference is between all three available editions.
