Sky Mavis has unveiled Axie Infinity: Atia’s Legacy, a new MMO set in the expansive Axie universe of Lunacia. Sold as the next evolution of the diverse franchise, the game integrates everything the team has learned up to this point about Web3 gaming in an effort to deliver a social, combat-driven, MMO experience. The team plans to host several playtests in 2025, with alpha testing beginning next month and a full launch anticipated in 2026.
Atia’s Legacy introduces squad-based real-time combat, where players lead a team of four Axies and their allies through dynamic battles. Unlike previous turn-based Axie games, this MMO offers shared gear and an interactive combat system that responds to player input, rather than the set and forget team builder with auto battling. Progression is streamlined, allowing squads to level up collectively, unlocking abilities and gear across rarity tiers from Common to Legendary.
At this stage, the game seems to be a mixture of several popular titles, with visuals reminiscent of Animal Crossing and Pokemon. The game is rich with plenty of PvE content, with missions, side quests, and resource gathering. Players will purportedly be able to craft and upgrade equipment, and jump into a town hub which serves as the main social center where players can meet, greet, and eventually build alliances. Largescale PvP us also a feature the team is working on.
Jeff Zirlin, Co-Founder and Chief Growth Officer at Sky Mavis, describes Atia’s Legacy as "The culmination of everything we've learned about building games and player-driven economies over the last seven years." He went on to express his thoughts on the journey Sky Mavis has been through when crafting Atia's Legacy, and how the industry has shifted in relation to Web3 games.
"From the very start, we committed to an economy centered around social coordination and war, an immersive world that strengthens and creates new friendships, and beautiful art with unique squad-based combat. There's been a lot of controversy around Web3 games in the past, but we're building a game that speaks for itself and makes the benefits of player-driven economies clear to anyone who experiences it. See you in Lunacia!"
With Web3 integration allowing NFT-based ownership of Axies and land, Atia’s Legacy seeks to blend a new immersive gameplay system into its virtual item and tokenomics economy.
Pre-registration is now open, with rewards for early supporters. As anticipation builds, all eyes are on Lunacia’s next adventure.
