Apex Legends studio Respawn Entertainment was hit with a round of layoffs earlier this week. The news comes following an announcement late last month that EA would be laying off 5% of its workforce, which also included the cancellation of Respawn’s unannounced Star Wars FPS project, which was in early development at the studio.
EA is looking to re-position Respawn to focus more on Respawn’s “owned brands” and its successful Star Wars Jedi series of games.
On the Apex Legends front, EA CEO Andrew Wilson expressed the company’s plans to appeal to wider audience by expanding Apex Legends “beyond the traditional battle royale universe” over the next year or so.
In a report by Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb earlier this month, we may have gotten a hint at what one of those “owned projects” might be. Grubb suggested that the game Vince Zampella previously alluded to being worked on by a “very small” team led by Titanfall director Steve Fukuda is actually set in the Titanfall universe, though it may not actually be Titanfall 3.
