Albion Online’s big Wild Blood update will be here on Monday, October 16th, and one of the highlights that will change a lot of things is the introduction of Shapeshifter Weapons.  The latest dev talk dives into the new mechanics and options.

Shapeshifter weapons are one way that the team is adding options for build diversity. These are done by way of a new staff line. The team completely overhauled staffs last year, and this is the biggest change yet.  There are seven different staffs that you can craft and they will let you transform into what they are calling Shapes. They are:

  • Shadow Panther: turns invisible when no enemies are nearby
  • Sylvian: increases allies’ health, provides healing, and can create a shield for your allies
  • Spirit Bear: an aggressive tank that disrupts enemies
  •  Werewolf: Heals itself and gains a speed boost from attacking enemies
  •  Hellfire Imp: Has very high damage but low defense; can revive in human form after death
  • Runestone Golem: a huge tank which is immune to all forced movement
  • Dawnbird: deals very high damage from a safe distance

When you use your human form abilities, you build up something called shift charges. when you get enough shift charges these will give you the energy for shape form abilities. Transform and the Shape’s abilities take over your human form abilities. It's a very interconnected system that will give you a lot of freedom. Your human form could be one particular build type and your shape that you change into could be something completely different, offering flexibility for solo players, as well as potential for teams.

You will craft your Shapeshifter weapons at the Hunter's lodge, and this system is closely tied to Tracking. You will have to track the corresponding creature  and defeat it to get rare ingredient drops and use them to craft the corresponding staff. This decision was made so that the weapons can remain “rare and valuable”  since they require a number of steps and skills to obtain and you can't just get them all quickly and overwhelm the system.
