Despite strong earnings in 2016, Activision has laid off 5% of its publishing staff as well as employees at Infinity Ward, Beenox and others in both the company's internal studios and central office. While earnings were strong, the company was keenly disappointed by Call of Duty: Infinite War and has only a few games ready for release in 2017 (Destiny 2 and Call of Duty). Layoffs did not affect Blizzard.
According to Kotaku, Activision had this to say: "Activision Publishing is realigning our resources to support our upcoming slate and adapt to the accelerating transition to digital, including opportunities for digital add-on content."
