Newzoo’s annual game industry report released earlier this week and offered some interesting data points on how gamers are spending their time. While it appears the video games market grew 2.6% last year, players actually spent less times in games overall, as they returned to old haunts such as Fortnite and League of Legends.

Fortnite, unsurprisingly, sits at the top of the most played pile and the usual suspects fill out the rest of the top 10 titles of 2023. These are titles such as Grand Theft Auto V, Counter-Strike 2, Roblox, Minecraft, Rocket League, Apex Legends, Fall Guys, Valorant, and Call of Duty. Starfield was the only single player game that broke into top 10 territory, and that was only for the Xbox list.

60% of all playtime in 2023 went to games six years old or older and five games, including Fortnite, Roblox, League of Legends, Minecraft, and GTA V represented 27% of all playtime in 2023.

The report is damning for developers looking to release new games as it appears more and more that gamers prefer to stick to the games they know and love rather than giving new games a real shot at capturing their attention.
