Two years after its announcement, and after a brief delay, 33 Immortals has finally launched into Early Access. The action co-op, which lets up to 33 players fight against monsters and giant bosses, is available on multiple platforms in early access, with more updates to come.
“Play a damned soul, and dive straight into epic 33-player co-op battles with instant ‘pick-up and raid’ matchmaking,” the official Thunder Lotus site reads. “Expand your arsenal and equip powerful new relics to permanently upgrade your soul.” This studio also crafted the sentimental single-player Spiritfarer and eldritch metroidvania Sundered, touting “hand-crafted worlds.”
With the launch of this early access, the team at Thunder Lotus also put out a brief roadmap for 2024 updates via a blog.
In the spring, they’ll tackle more fundamental needs, such as balancing, UI/UX changes, accessibility, graphics settings, and more. Come summer, they’ll have “private sessions,” the ability to Descent, the Ordeal system, and one point just called “Decorate the Dark Woods,” which we can only assume means some kind of custom “home” decoration system for now. The next massive combat content update is slated for the fall.
The game was originally slated for a 2024 early access release, but it got pushed back a few months late last year. Premiered at the Xbox Games Showcase in 2023, it stunned at the time with gorgeous animation and a glimpse of the 33-player co-op gameplay.
In regards to gameplay, it looks like it has the classic feel of other top-down rogue-likes like Enter the Gungeon, Binding of Issac, and Rabbit & Steel. But much like FFXIV raiders have drawn parallels in Rabbit & Steel, other FFXIV players like myself might pin the choreography and visual tells of 33 Immortals closer to the mass semi-chaos of one of the MMORPG’s “Alliance Raids.”
33 Immortals is out now in the Epic Games Store and on Xbox Series X|S, plus Xbox Games Pass compatibility for Windows PC. There’s also a FAQ on the site with more details about the Early Access phase.
EDIT: Previously more consoles were listed for this game. The piece has been updated to reflect the actual compatibility.
