Sea of Thieves had a pretty massive exploit that was discovered after the launch of Season 13 that will have repercussions for anyone who took advantage.
Season 13 of Sea of Thieves went live at the end of July, and one major malfunction caused a bit of waves on the high seas. The bug caused a hefty amount of extra rewards to be granted when completing Rituals at the ancient temples. Because of this, 300 billion gold was introduced to the market and 20k players got a huge boost to their progression. With exploits, players can seem to figure them out in the blink of an eye and get a major boost in-game.
Production Director Drew Stevens discussed the exploit in detail during the latest dev update video, stating that exploitation of these types of bugs will not be tolerated now or ever.
With the issues surfacing and quickly being resolved, there are plenty more changes coming to Sea of Thieves in just a few short weeks. The Blunderbuss will no longer be a one-shot kill, as this was a major complaint from players. Instead, players' health can drain quite rapidly but not be fully depleted until at least two shots have been fired.
Another complaint addressed was the Silent Boarding of ships which also ties into the new Blunderbuss changes. The knockback can slap enemies right off the side of your ship and stop them from being able to board as easily. Yet, the devs then introduced a new Grappling Gun that allows us to board ships and move quite quickly around the opposing ships which stirs up more intense fights. Some fans don’t seem thrilled about the Grappling Gun, as one comment on YouTube states
“rare: we don't want people to board your boat silently. that wouldn't be fair
also rare: we're adding a grapple hook so people can board from any direction at any time.”
Though several major changes are coming to Sea of Thieves in the coming weeks, there is plenty to do right now that Captain Flameheart has set his sights on the seas.
