New Facts About the Tempest, Not Just Another Normandy -

Game Informer is continuing its exclusive reveal articles about Mass Effect: Andromeda, this time with a look at the player's central base, the Tempest. Bioware has given it a unique look and feel to separate it from the Normandy, the ship on which Shepard and crew traveled and fought in the original trilogy.

Here's what we know about Tempest:

  • as expected, there is a bridge, galley, garage and Pathfinder's quarters
  • Tempest is piloted by a Salarian
  • navigation happens on the bridge
  • skill point distribution takes place in the galley
  • Nomad, the game's planetary vehicle, is parked in the garage
  • Nomad can be given custom paint jobs
  • some control over Pathfinder's quarters decor will be available
  • Tempest is built for scouting
  • unlike Normandy, Tempest is not one-of-a-kind
  • there will be no loading screens as players move about the ship
  • moving from ship to planet surface should take much less immersion-breaking time than before
  • players will not be able to fly the Tempest, simply select navigation points
  • crew members will have an area they inhabit, though not always standing in a single spot
