Developer Profile: Kyle Kessenrich of PlanetWide Games

A producer/community manager on RYL: Path of the Emperor talks about his path to the industry

Kyle Kessenrich is a producer over at Planetwide Games. He was kind enough to take some time to talk about his job, how he got there and a bit about their game RYL.

MMORPG.com: Can you tell us a bit about what you currently do, and the day-to-day responsibilities of that job?
Kyle Kessenrich:

My primary role is that of community manager in charge of all Game Masters. This task includes communicating with our developer and the community on new patches/updates, bugs, and customer support issues.

MMORPG.com: Breaking into the gaming industry is the dream of many. How did you arrive at your current company? Can you run us through what brought you to this company and into the industry in general?
Kyle Kessenrich:

I started out in this industry as a bookkeeper for a start-up company, and fortunately was able to move up the ladder on the management side. After the failure of that company, CEO of that company, along with few others, formed another start-up company. That company was bought out by Planetwide Games and that is where I currently work. My original role was again on the management side, but I really wanted to try my hand on the dev side and was able to get involved with the gaming community.

MMORPG.com: What to you is the most challenging part of your current job?
Kyle Kessenrich:

Keeping people happy. I find that a lot of my job entails customer service and it tests your patience to deal with various customer issues.

MMORPG.com: You have what many would consider a dream job. What is your favorite part of your job?
Kyle Kessenrich:

I think it’s a dream job because I dream about it a lot even when I’m sleeping. :) Honestly, it’s great making a virtual world for people to live out their fantasy and escape from their daily stress.

MMORPG.com: Since it’s recent launch, how has RYL progressed? Can you give us a state of the game?
Kyle Kessenrich:

Just as any new company, we have had growing pains. We've experienced many obstacles along the way, especially in the early stages. Working with a developer that is overseas has proven to be a daunting task. The goal of any MMO is to provide an environment that is truly rich and fun, and ultimately, it’s the players who make the game a success. Our community is very demanding of us and it’s only made us stronger. RYL is improving daily and we expect to gather momentum and grab our niche in the every-growing MMO market.
