Dwarf Architecture Overview -

Keeper has posted a piece covering Dwarven Architecture over at the official Middle-Earth Online site.  The developer's diary covers the thinking that went into the design of the Dwarven locations for the Tolkien-inspired MMORPG:

As for the actual living-spaces, a Dwarf-home would be a much different thing from a Man's thatched farmhouse. What need has a Dwarf for walls or roof in a place that has no rainstorms, no snow, and little in the way of winds and temperature change? If Dwarves are such expert miners, wouldn't they just carve themselves a smaller cave connected to a main social area, and put a door up for privacy?

Dwarves love the showy and the grandiose too much to make the exteriors of their homes nothing but a humble door leading away from a hall. They would have extensive facades, carved and decorated in intricately worked metals. Walls would be a means of proclaiming "Look at me, I have prestige!"
