Wind Slayer Interview
Recently, MMORPG.com's Jon Wood had the opportunity to ask a few questions of the developers of Wind Slayer, a 2D MMO.

Can you tell us some of the story behind Wind Slayer |
Wind Slayer: |
Wind Slayer is set in the beautiful fantasy world of Beuritania, where players can begin their quest to explore varied locations and battle fierce enemies and boss monsters. We definitely establish an exciting universe and give players just enough backstory and motivation to begin their adventure in Beuritania, but we’re not going to bog down the experience with lots of quest text and narrative – just hop online and start playing! Embark on a hero’s journey and secure your place in history as one of the land’s greatest adventurers. Defeat monsters and challenging bosses to gain experience and treasure, complete quests that will take you to the farthest reaches of Beuritania, or test your skills against other adventurers in exciting player-versus-player battles. Define your own unique style with hundreds of distinctive in-game items, form mutually-beneficial alliances through a deep mentoring system and much more. With Wind slayer, our focus is on the PvP experience. PvE content takes a backseat to the action-packed thrills of PvP arena matches, and serves primarily as a way for players to familiarize themselves with the game and hone their skills and abilities in preparation for the ultimate challenge – the PvP arena. |

Can you tell us about some of the features that set Wind Slayer apart from other MMOs? |
Wind Slayer: |
As mentioned, Wind Slayer is all about PvP combat. Our gameplay and community features are all focused around the PvP experience, which we believe creates a dynamic, fun environment with plenty of healthy competition. We’ll have a variety of PvP modes and maps at the launch of the Wind Slayer Open Beta and will be rolling out new features and modes regularly. One of our first major updates will bring guilds to the game, allowing players to team up and form organized PvP teams. PvP in Wind Slayer is fast, frantic, and fun. It’s simple and easy to get into, but with 6 branching character classes with dozens of skills and abilities each, there’s also a lot of depth. When players face off in Wind Slayer, they will all be automatically set to the same level, meaning PvP in Wind Slayer is all about skill, not necessarily about the amount of time you’ve spent playing the game. |

Some players who have seen videos of the gameplay compare it to Nexon’s MapleStory. Can you speak to this? |
Wind Slayer: |
While both Wind Slayer and MapleStory are 2D side-scrolling MMORPGs, the similarities end there. MapleStory is a very PvE-centric game. Maple Story is a successful game, but we feel that there are a lot of players out there who are hungry for a more PvP-focused title. Wind Slayer is set to capture this untapped market and give players some exciting new options. |
MMORPG.com: |
Has Wind Slayer been released in other markets? If so, how successful was it? |
Wind Slayer: |
Wind Slayer has already been released in Korea in Japan and has done well in both markets. In Korea the game is a flagship title for its publisher. There’s definitely a desire out there for approachable and energetic PvP experiences like what we offer with Wind Slayer. We’re confident that we can replicate a lot of the game’s overseas success in the North American market. |
MMORPG.com: |
Why the decision to create a 2D MMO? |
Wind Slayer: |
Because it’s a 2D side-scrolling MMORPG, Wind Slayer is a game that anyone can pick up and play. Outspark is all about accessible, fun games so it seemed like a perfect fit for our audience. Any player will be able to easily download Wind Slayer and quickly start having fun without getting lost in cumbersome control schemes or needlessly complex character creation systems. |
MMORPG.com: |
How does a 2D MMO compete with its 3D counterparts in a jam-packed market? |
Wind Slayer: |
A game’s graphics and visual style are important, but the most important thing is accessibility and fun. Making games more accessible is a popular topic right now but it’s something Outspark has done and will continue to do – it’s why we’ve managed to get more than 3.5 million people to join our virtual playground since late 2007. Getting into Wind Slayer is so fast and easy, and the controls are so simple, that any player, regardless of skill level, will be able to jump into the game and immediately start having fun. With hundreds of items, branching character classes, and robust PvP and crafting systems, Wind Slayer isn’t a shallow game; we’ve put a lot of depth directly at your finger tips. We think that players that try Wind Slayer are in for a lot of fun. If you’ve never played a 2D side-scrolling MMORPG before, we know you’ll be pleasantly surprised – so come by Outspark.com and give it a try! |
