Wayback Wednesday - Rolling Albion in DAOC

Last week on Wayback Wednesday I continued my adventure on Grakuleaver the reaver for the forces of Albion in Dark Age of Camelot. This was the 11th episode of our 12 episode arc and we participated in RvR in Cathal Valley. This week I was joined by Talal Saad associate producer for EA/Mythic and John Thornhill Mythic developer extraordinaire. I also had a super secret agent embedded in my party that no longer works for Mythic but is near and dear to a lot of your hearts. I will let you watch the episode and figure out who it is, and he even brought his wife along.

This month to freshen up the conversation and avoid it feeling like an hour and a half long grill session of the developers, Sophie and Card with the help of the community, came came up with some questions about Talal and John’s personal experience with the game as players and not just developers. The first question the community wanted to ask was the only question that was dodged all night. It was, “What class do you play more than the rest?” Obvious reasons being just that, Talal did not want to give any sense of impropriety and let people believe that he has a favorite class. However, if you listen to his answer to the questions, “Which patch has been your favorite so far,” about 11:30 into the video I think you can make a pretty safe guess. Talal explains that his favorite patch was testing the archery system in the area of 1.83.  Talal further went on to explain their was a bug in the code and he was running around one shotting keeps. If archers could still one shot keeps I think they would be everyone’s favorite class. Or most hated!

One of the funniest answers of the evening was to, “What was your first day in the office like?” To be honest from the response I am almost surprised Talal had a second. Talal started off in Customer Service and had more than he could bargain for with his first customer. By the end of the conversation his eyeballs were involuntarily twitching. You can listen to the rest of the story at 13:15 into the video.

We also fielded some technical questions and John stepped and answered these. Could we see multi-monitor support? John replied, “it is possible, I don’t know when it would come out if we put it on the list. There is a long list of things we are working on.” If you are hoping for multi-monitor support I would not get very excited to see this in the near future, if ever. While we may not see support for that feature we could very well see support for account wide settings such as chat colors. When asked about that John replied, “I think that is a great idea that we can put on our list. If we ask the players what they want it won’t be on the top of the list but it will be on the list.” If this is a feature that you would like to see added into DAoC make sure to provide feedback to the developers through the player feedback tool. In addition, tooltips with timers only was confirmed by Tala as being on the list of things they plan to work on.

Last week I asked what was your favorite realm and why? The winner of the 30-day DAoC time card is Holygoose. They stated that:

My favorite realm is Albion. Why? Eh, because it’s my first realm obviously. This is where I had the most fun back in 2004. I remember leveling in Avalon City with some friends, where the pallys impressed everyone by pulling tons of mobs and so on, in short the old school leveling! I’ve always been fascinated by the Arthur legend, so Albion was an obvious choice for me, I still remember how I kept getting lost in Camelot. Plus, my favorite class is definitely the reaver. I just love it since the start. Thinking of Albion brings me back some good old memories, with friends I have met there playing for hours. I think this is something I won’t ever find again.”

Thanks for sharing your story Holygoose.

The next episode of Wayback Wednesday for DAoC will be on April 17th and we will conclude our Albion episode arc with a jaunt in the New Frontiers. After that, who knows? I can promise you that it will not be the last Wayback Wednesday in DAoC. Next week for Wayback Wednesday I will be playing Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. Last night I played some Vanguard developer free while I got my toes wet. You can see the mayhem on our YouTube Channel. You can watch all the fun live on our streams page MMORPG.com Live Streams!. The action for Wayback Wednesday begins at 9:30 pm EDT. Be sure to check out the stream this weekend as we will have access to Neverwinter Beta 3 and streaming all kinds of odd hours. As always thanks for watching!
