This week is a seminal one for the Camelot Unchained team as they take to the airwaves to talk about the game that man are looking to as a return to old-school MMOs with definite new-school elements. Today in the second of our CU features, Mark Jacobs et al are ready to talk crafting. Check out our exclusive interview before heading to the Camelot Unchained Twitch.tv channel right about now to participate in a live stream event where even more will be revealed.
MMORPG.com: What is “mudflation” in your eyes?
Mark Jacobs: Mudflation is an old-school term that refers to the tendency of the economies of MUDs (and modern MMOs) to get out of balance after running for a while. This is generally due to the easy attainability of money (even at a slow rate) without enough associated costs that one finds in real life. This causes more and more money to flow into the system and not enough to be taken out, so after a while, players usually have a surplus of cash, and goals that were seen as unobtainable during the game’s design become nothing more than small hurdles.
MMORPG.com: How do you plan on crafting being something that people will want to watch?
Mark Jacobs: We want to make it fun and interactive, and we also hope that other players will be able to join in and help. Wouldn’t it be cool if players could help feed energy to the participating crafters to help in completing a particularly difficult part of the process or in empowering the item? And then, being rewarded for doing that.
MMORPG.com: You say crafters can control every aspect of the final item. What stats will they control since earlier it was said in stats that there would not be stats on items to stop item creep?
Mark Jacobs: When I refer to an item’s stats, I mean things like its weight, durability, edge, etc.
MMORPG.com: Will crafters be required to have escorts to go into certain dangerous areas to gather the best materials?
Mark Jacobs: Yes and no. Yes, the crafters can be escorted to go into dangerous areas to gather certain materials. However, they will be able to get them from non-crafters as well. They may also be able to recover certain materials from captured structures/items from opposing Realms.
MMORPG.com: If you use an enemy player’s soul gem in an item will the enemy be able to sense that item?
Mark Jacobs: Yes, it will work both ways.
