  • The Best of BlizzCon 2017

BlizzCon 2017 was probably my favorite BlizzCon in years. So much great content was revealed, while two of the IPs were a little less than enthusiastically represented (I’ve a hunch that next year will be big for the Devil). But far and away, it was a big year for World of Warcraft, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm. Read on for our picks for the Best of BlizzCon 2017.

  • Giant Robots come to HotS

If there’s one thing that Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm MOBA is known for, it’s breaking and stomping all over the mold used by other games in the genre, featuring a number of battlegrounds with unique mechanics that sometimes feel a little bit off the wall. Heroes’ latest map from the Overwatch universe, Volskaya Foundry, won’t be making a break from that tradition.

Heroes of the Storm is gearing up for its prolific Heroes 2.0 progression and rewards overhaul, but that’s not the only thing that’s coming in the next patch. Put your nostalgia hats on, because the MOBA’s next hero is slapping an old Diablo 2 classic straight into the Nexus. If you ever played a Javazon, then you’d better get ready for Cassia.

This week I had the opportunity to visit the Heroes of the Storm Spring Summit to get a sneak peak of what Blizzard has in store for the MOBA, and it turns out they’re planning a whole lot. So much so that they’re even touting this as the beginning of “Heroes 2.0”. So what does this entail? Let’s dive in.

From the EU Final Fantasy Fanfest that our own Rob Lashley attended and killed news wise to Blizzard's big week for updates to a ton of videos showing off some of our favorite and upcoming titles, it was a great week to be a gamer.

Blizzard announced yesterday that World of Warcraft tokens can be purchased in game and then used to fill up a virtual currency wallet called BattleNet Balance. In today's column, we'll take a look at some of the more fun things you can buy with your BattleNet Balance in each of Blizzard's other titles!

Blizzard's Heroes of the Storm recently entered a small "technical alpha", and I managed to somehow luck out and snag a key. They've taken what makes a genre work, extracted the good and left out what some might consider the bad. Read on to find out why it's eating up all my free time.

Each arena has much simplified objectives without lanes. Dabiri noted how internal playtests had their fellow devs stating it was the most fun they’d had in awhile.

  • The Best of 2015

If this year of MMO releases can be categorized by any one thing, it might be that the existing MMOs in the landscape had great years, while we wait for the next big thing to come along. Meanwhile, the single player RPG had an absolutely stellar time, with some truly amazing games and expansions released throughout the calendar year. We’ve polled our staff, and these are the games we loved the most in 2015, and the ones we’re looking forward to the most in 2016.

With Blizzcon 2016 ready to kick off with the opening ceremony just about 24-hours from now, and with recent Internet breathlessness over the “leaked” image showing both a male and female Necromancer as well as a year’s worth of job postings for an “unannounced Diablo project”, the hype for a possible major Diablo franchise announcement has reached heights it hasn’t in many years.

Last year’s convention was pretty intense, with Legion info, Overwatch, Warcraft movie goodness… it’s hard to imagine that 2016 could somehow top last year. But it’s the TENTH BlizzCon. Some time ago, I wrote a piece about whether Heroes of the Storm could achieve the same casual success as Hearthstone, comparing Blizzard’s two new entries to the MOBA and online TCG genres, respectively. It’s difficult to determine just yet how financially profitable is HotS after its official release in June, but it anecdotally seems to have engendered a great amount of critical and community acclaim.

  • Power Rankings: MOBAs

It all began with a mod. While some observers trace the history of the mobile online battle arena category back as far as the 1989 Sega console game Herzog Zwei, it's more common to cite Aeon of Strife. A fan-made StarCraft custom map released nine years later, it was four on four, but with a player squad vs. an AI one and without leveling up. It was also the inspiration for the 2003 Warcraft III mod, Defense of the Ancients, which featured two human teams and in-match hero advancement.

I’m not quite sure how much money I spent on Magic Online when it initially began to gain some popularity, but I can tell you that even trying to estimate that number results in no small amount of embarrassment for me. I love TCGs, and have spent a good amount of time (and cash) dabbling in a range of games, from open-ended classics like Magic: The Gathering to more discrete releases such as The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game.

A cursory look shows that the Keynote will take place on Friday morning, ending at 11:45 a.m. Then nothing, not a single thing sits on the schedule until after 2:00 p.m. This is not the Blizzcon of the past and it is prime gaming real estate.

The main issue holding the game back right now is how Blizzard has decided to monetize Heroes.
