Mad Catz Is Revamping Its Popular MMO Mouse, Dubbed The MMO 7+, Which Is Due Out This Year

At CES 2024 last week, Mad Catz unveiled a revamped version of its popular MMO mouse, the MMO 7+. The new mouse, dubbed the M.M.O. 7+, aims to bring the highly customizable mouse to a new audience, with revamped ergonomics and performance.

If you're unfamiliar with the MMO 7, that's not surprising. The original launched over a decade ago now, back when Mad Catz was still finding its way post-Rock Band and MLG Pro Gaming contract days. The MMO 7 has been a mouse cherished by MMO vets for its performance, customization and more.

While MMO mice nowadays are typically a standard mouse with a ton of numbered buttons slapped on the side, like Corsair's Scimitar, Steelseries' Aerox 9 Wireless, or Razer's Naga V2 Pro,  the M.M.O. 7+ continues to eschew that design philosophy. Instead, it keeps the features that made the original variant such a force for classic MMO players.

With 21 programmable buttons, a shift mode to allow for double input commands, and five programmable profiles, the MMO 7+ boasts 210 different inputs. Whether that plays out functionally will be up for reviewers and users to test, but still, but if it's even only half of that functionally, that's not bad. The MMO 7+ does come with the 5D button on the thumb side, which is great for quickly accessing different skill bars for example. I can see myself instead of stretching my hand to hit Shift, Alt, or Ctrl to access a new skill bar in The Lord of the Rings Online; using that 5D button will make it a fair bit easier. Made even better: these profiles are all saved on the mouse itself using Mad Catz's software, meaning if you use it on another computer, all your presets go with you.

When speaking with Mad Catz at CES 2024 last week, the team was very cognizant that there is quite a sizeable audience who are looking for this mouse - many of whom love the form factor so much that the manufacturers didn't want to alter it too much.

One major improvement is the fact that this is now wireless with a battery rated to last at least 40 hours. While this is on the low side for gaming mice nowadays, I do appreciate no longer feeling tethered, especially if I need to take my MMO 7+ on the road with me to use with, say, a Steam Deck or other handheld gaming PC. However, there doesn't seem to be Bluetooth on the mouse, instead connecting only via its USB-C cable or via a 2.4 GHz wireless connection, presumably with a dongle.

The horizontal scroll wheel also makes a triumphant return, something Mad Catz basically hinted was non-negotiable when they were finalizing the device. The MMO 7+ will also still feature all the same modularity Mad Catz' mice have been known for over the years, allowing for interchangeable pink rests, palm rests, and more.

One area that still seems to be in production is the decision of mouse switches. While the mouse will come with Kailh switches, we don't know which ones yet. The MMO 7+ packs Pixart's 3395 Sensor with a max sensitivity of 26K DPI.

While we don't know exactly when the Mad Catz MMO 7+ will launch this year, the company seems to be targeting June 2024 according to its press materials from the show. Hopefully, we'll learn more on pricing and exact availability as we get closer. But if you've been eyeing a classic MMO 7 on the secondary market, or your decade-old mouse is still limping along, Mad Catz's reimagining of the MMO mouse deserves keeping an eye on.
