Coming in at $99.99 the Logitech C922 is one of the better options for gaming cameras right now. The camera is lightweight and compact, which makes it easier to use for those of us with restricted areas for positioning a camera. This version also ships with a tripod for even more flexibility in positioning. If you look closely it almost looks like you are looking at Johnny 5 from Short Circuit, and yes, I am really showing my age with that reference, but it doesn’t change the fact that I call my camera Johnny now. While streaming, OBS and XSplit are the best programs to use with built-in support, however, other programs like Streamlabs OBS and the camera will work just fine. Another excellent feature of the C922 is ChromaCam. Now, if you’re a streamer like me, you know the value of setting up a green screen and using filters in OBS or XSplit. If you don’t, imagine being able to cut out the background, allowing you to appear purely over gameplay (or another background of your choice). If you’ve ever tried, you know the unexpected challenges that can occur.
Well, good news for those of you who know the struggle: ChromaCam is essentially a built-in green screen for your camera. You have the ability to have a blank background or to add images directly behind what the camera identifies as the streamer. This works very well with programs like OBS and XSplit with software from the Logitech website, but it doesn’t work at all with Streamlabs OBS. Speaking of streaming, the Logitech C922 comes HD ready and allows you to stream Full HD at 1080P at 30FPS and 720P at 60FPS. If you’re willing to drop to 720 to achieve the higher framerate, this will allow your own capture to match your gameplay if you’re already streaming with a 60FPS output. This all gives you a greater range of stream quality to play around with.
The C922 allows you to get fast, smooth uploads with H.264, a common compression technology that utilizes less network bandwidth. Aside from these definite steps up in visual enhancements, this webcam also comes with Automatic Low Light Correction, which is very effective. My time with this webcam has proven fruitful and my stream quality has improved because of it. My old Logitech webcam was a few years old and maxed at 720p with a low frame rate, and it was flickering and causing quality issues due to its age.
