Govee Gaming Pixel Light - Design and Highlights

Govee, as a brand, has long been a personal favorite in the world of accent lighting. From the excellent Glide Hexa Pro LED Light to the immersive TV Backlight 3 Lite, there is a lot to appreciate about Govee’s commitment to innovative design. This latest release, the Gaming Pixel Light, is a unique take on the classic pixel art display. In true Govee fashion, it is packed full of features and utility.

While two models are available, Govee sent over the Gaming Pixel Light 52*32 (also available in a 32*32 version) for review. The Gaming Pixel Light features a retro sci-fi-inspired design complete with small accent detail work. Onboard controls are located along the left side of the top bezel and allow for quick access to power, volume, Scene Carousel mode (essentially a preset playlist of scenes on cycle) and a custom shortcut button or easy access to features such as a timer or stop watch.

Examining the backside of the unit reveals a single 3W speaker, power adaptor port, factory reset button and mounting threads for the wall mount bracket. Along with the option to wall mount the Gaming Pixel Light, Govee has also included a small stand for desk or shelf placement, providing users with multiple options for displaying their favorite pixel art.

The Gaming Pixel light measures 10.47 x 7.09 x 1.38 inches, making it an ideal device size for both distant and close-up viewing. This adaptable viewing distance is all thanks to the display, which provides an impressive 1664 LED. With support for 9 LED beam/? lamp density and 30fps frame rate, the images and GIF displayed are presented clearly and brightly. This closer LED density also provides are richer overall viewing experience, providing more shade and depth of color.

To help reduce eye fatigue, the Gaming Pixel Light has also come with TÜV Rheinland flicker-free certification. This certification ensures that the display provides minimal flickering and a host of tests for eye protection. This level of certification speaks to Govee’s desire to create a premium product for the end user.

The aforementioned speaker, while not designed to replace your existing audio setup, provides a fun accent to the overall pixel art experience. It provides an array of pre-installed audio files designed to mimic classic 8-bit sound effects and music. For those who wish, there is also the option to upload your audio files with support for WAV, MP3 and OGG. While playing music on the Gaming Pixel Light is possible, its small speaker isn’t designed to produce high-quality playback.

Instead, it acts as a fun accent to the overall pixel art experience. The speaker also serves a practical function by providing real-time alerts when connected to your smartphone. It can also provide alarming and timer audio cues when set. While I would have loved to see a bit more functionality here, perhaps with a better speaker and sync capabilities to music streaming services or pairing similar to standard Bluetooth speakers, the built-in speaker does, nonetheless, provide a fun, atmospheric element to the Gaming Pixel Light.

The overall build quality and design of the Govee Gaming Pixel Light are sturdy and unique, providing a fun, functional art piece for your gaming setup or TV room. Setting up the Gaming Pixel Light, as with every piece of Govee hardware I’ve tested, was a simple and quick affair. With the Govee app installed (available on iOS and Android), simply plug in and power up the Gaming Pixel Light and follow the app prompts. In less than three minutes, you’ll be connected and controlling your new light, which integrates well into an existing setup as well as an independent light setup.

Govee Gaming Pixel Light - Performance and Features

The Gaming Pixel Light performed quite well in testing. The light provides a vibrant and bright image thanks to the aforementioned 1664 LEDs laid out over the 52*32 grid. If brightness is a concern, the Gaming Pixel Light provides a fully dimmable experience thanks to the software-controlled dimmer switch built into the app. Turning the light on and off can also be controlled via the app or its corresponding hardware switch, providing the user with various options for control.

On the note of control, the Gaming Pixel Light supports both Alexa and Google Assistant. Setting it up with my existing Google Home followed the same basic setup as any other Google Home-supported device and took only a moment to integrate. Once connected, the Gaming Pixel Light was easily controlled via voice commands.

Govee has included an impressive lineup of modes for users to take full advantage of, giving you complete freedom to design to your heart's content. DYI and finger sketch modes provide full creative control of the Pixel Art image, while the new AI generator allows you to input a prompt and have the system feed back images for you to choose from. All three of these modes work quite well with the AI generator doing a solid job at creating some great artwork via prompts. Images can also be uploaded, scanned and turned into pixel art for display. It all works well, though in testing some more complex images don’t translate quite as clearly as I had hoped. Regardless, the overall results of these particular modes were consistently great and provided some fun, creative moments.

The Gaming Pixel Light also comes preloaded with several scenes and display modes. The former provides an impressive library of themed art and GIF art to choose from, while the latter provides more functional information, such as the weather or sports updates. The light also comes with a music mode that works as you would expect, with the user able to select from a series of preset animated images that sync up to the surrounding audio and present some spectacular visuals for the user to enjoy.

Govee has also integrated a Share Space where creators can upload and present their creations for others to download and use. At present, there is a pretty robust library of animated and still images to choose from, with the library sure to expand over time. It's a fun way to collaborate with others and as with the rest of the creation aspects of the Govee app is easy to use.

There are a lot of features packed into this relatively small but powerful light. It provides some great opportunities for creativity to be displayed and also integrates well into an existing Govee lighting setup. It's also simple to use while still offering a lot of options for the user. The Gaming Pixel Light is another well-constructed and implemented light from Govee.

Final Thoughts

The Govee Gaming Pixel Light is a fun and feature-rich pixel art experience. Whether you’re looking to display your favorite pixel art in all its glory, have a simple accent light in your favorite space or a creative display for functional information, the Gaming Pixel Light has you covered. While the $139.99 price point might seem on the higher end for a Pixel Art display, the robust feature set and integrations with the rest of the Govee ecosystem help raise the Gaming Pixel Light above the rest of the crowd.
