Gaming mice come in all shapes and sizes. There are big ones, small ones, basic ones and strange ones, but they all do the same basic thing: allow you to interface with your computer. Not all mice are created equal and, frankly, some are overpriced. The Cougar Gaming Surpassion Optical Gaming Mouse will help you conquer the field without emptying your wallet for the privilege.

For starters, I would like to hit on the FPS-oriented design of the Surpassion mouse. This gaming mouse has been designed to fit in the palm of your hand and has a slightly indented base which allows you to use a claw grip for more control. The finger buttons have also been designed to require less force on pressing so that activation is easier, this allows you to react faster.
The mouse also has an optical sensor. Optical and laser sensors are both used in mic but differ based on the technology used to track each movement. Optical mice utilize LED light as its illumination source and track based on image captures. Laser mice, well, use lasers for tracking. Depending on your surface, for example, using a soft pad versus a hard pad, a laser or optical sensor may be a better fit, but by and large both provide reliable tracking.
The Surpassion uses the very highly regarded Pixart PMW3330 sensor, which is well known for its excellent positional tracking. Not only does it provide for those fast-paced and intense moments in your favorite shooter, but it also allows for a lower MSRP out of the gate.
The Surpassion also comes with a digital screen just below the lens which shows you the current DPI and Polling Rate settings. The Polling Rate settings are on the bottom and range from 125Hz to 1000Hz, with the latter being the main setting on the mouse. The DPI settings range from 400 and double all the way up to 7200 DPI. These settings can be changed using two buttons on either side of the readout.
Two other settings included in the mouse are angle snapping and lift off distance. Angle snapping allows you to do your normal, everyday computing tasks easier, but you have the option to turn it off to allow you to aim better in your favorite first-person shooter. Lift off distance allows you to set where your mouse stops tracking as you adjust your mouse and re-center it on your mousepad.
Another excellent feature of this mouse are the first rate OMRON switches. These switches are rated for 50 million clicks, whereas many competitors only promise 20-30 million. This boasts a lot for the longevity of the mouse. It also comes with real rubber flanks for anti-slip purposes. These rubber pieces allow you to grip your mouse easier, and it prevents you from dropping the mouse during an intense session.
One of the last features of the mouse is the multicolor backlight with 13 color modes. There are 11 single-color options as well as 2 multi-colored options and they are changeable at the click of a button as well. The dual illumination areas are the logo on the palm rest and the middle mouse ring. Your hand will cover the logo, of course but it still looks great on the desk.
Final Thoughts
The Surpassion Gaming mouse from Cougar is an overall well rounded-peripheral that comes in at a great price. I would recommend for those FPS players out there as well as gamers who prefer a simple mouse that offers great performance at a budget price. Between the anti-slip rubber grips, an overall sleek design, and easy on-the-fly adjustability, this mouse will afford anyone a long lifetime of playing power.
