CIDOO V65 - Fundamentals

If it seems like the CIDOO is drawing inspiration from the custom keyboard community, that’s because it has! In fact, this keyboard began its life as a custom keyboard kit you could only purchase through group buy called the FinalKey V65. It’s a true custom keyboard that you don’t have to build yourself and is ready to go straight out of the box.

The CIDOO V65 V2 is a mechanical keyboard that boasts multiple modes of connectivity, smooth switches, high-quality keycaps, and a stunning retro theme. Available in Retro Grey and Moon White, the keyboard is encased in CNC machined aluminum, providing a strong and sturdy enclosure.

Despite its compact size, the V65 V2 still manages to offer a comfortable typing experience with its 65% layout. While it does reduce the total amount of keys to 66 (66% layout?), it does away with the Numpad, function keys, and some of the navigation and editing keys. However, it does retain the Delete, Page-up, and Page-down for easier navigation in documents and on websites. Adding to its functionality, the CIDOO V65 V2 also features a metal rotary knob that acts as volume control.

The 65% layout has become increasingly popular in the world of mechanical keyboards. Its compact size and minimalist design make it a great option for those who value desk space and don't require a numpad. However, adjusting to this layout will depend on how you use your keyboard. If you're someone who rarely uses the Numpad, you'll likely find the transition to be seamless. As a gamer, I don't often use the Numpad, but it did take me some time to adjust to its absence when typing. Overall, the 65% layout is a great choice for those looking for a smaller keyboard that still retains functionality. The extra desk space is also a nice bonus if you need more mousing space.

Swapping keyboard configurations can be a hassle, especially if you have to replace the entire keyboard. However, with hot-swappable switches, swapping configurations is a breeze. The CIDOO V65 V2 features hot-swappable 3-pin & 5-pin switches, making it easy to change switches in case of switch failures or accidents such as spills. This feature allows you to keep using your keyboard in any situation without having to replace the entire keyboard.

The CIDOO V65 boasts a unique gasket-mounted design that utilizes a layer of PORON foam, a polyurethane-based foam known for its compression resistance properties. This layer of foam is sandwiched between the case and PCB, dampening vibrations and reducing overall resonance for a cleaner and more precise sound profile while typing. The V65 also comes with a flexible polycarbonate plate, allowing for a bit more movement when typing and a softer experience.

The CIDOO V65 V2 offers various connectivity options, allowing you to connect via USB Type-C wired connection or Bluetooth across multiple devices, including Android, Mac, and Windows. Additionally, this keyboard boasts impressive RGB backlighting that is bright and visually stunning, though the keycaps aren’t backlit, so the RGB is more “bed lighting.” The V65 V2 comes with high-quality Retro Dye-Sublimation PBT Keycaps, which are Cherry profile to feel instantly familiar. PBT keycaps are generally more durable and solid feeling under the fingers (though there are many great ABS options, too!). These keycaps are more durable, oil-resistant, and can withstand wear and tear better than other options. Combined with the Quake Matt Linear switches, the CIDOO V65 V2 produces a great sound and feel.

It's important to note that when using Bluetooth connectivity, the backlighting is turned off to conserve battery life. However, when using the USB Type-C wired connection, the impressive RGB backlighting shines brightly and adds a nice touch to the overall aesthetics of the keyboard.

CIDOO V65 - Performance

Unlike other custom keyboards, the CIDOO V65 comes with switches and keycaps installed straight out of the box. These switches are a called Quake Matte linears and are designed with a 47g operating force, nylon housings, and POM stems. Straight from the factory, they are pre-lubed, providing a clear and crisp typing experience. The switches are remarkably smooth and responsive, allowing for precise and comfortable keystrokes whether typing or gaming. The gasket-mounted construction of the keyboard also adds to the cushioned feel of the switches, preventing any discomfort from bottoming out. While there is some flex when typing, it's only noticeable with heavy pressure applied to the keyboard.

When it comes to gaming, the CIDOO V65 V2 also delivers an enjoyable gaming experience. Although it took some time to get used to its extra smooth switches and compact layout, it has now raised the bar for my keyboard expectations. Compared to my previous keyboards, it provides a superior sound and feel which is hard to go back from.

Now, are sound and feel gaming features? No, but at the same time, a keyboard that offers a satisfying use experience enhances everything you do at your computer, including gaming. Its Bluetooth connectivity feature supports up to three devices, and I did not experience any noticeable latency or interruptions during its use, though for the best responsiveness, you’ll want to stick with a wired connection (it’s perfect for working on a tablet, though). While it is unclear which version of Bluetooth it supports, pairing with other devices was made easy using the provided instructions.

The weight of the CIDOO V65 V2 was a novel experience for me, as it came in at almost three pounds and was deceptively heavy. However, this was a good thing as it gave the keyboard a premium feel and a solidity at my desk that prevented it from moving around. That is has such an excellent case despite its lower cost really makes you question why so many gaming keyboards are as expensive as they are without offering similar build quality.

Software

The CIDOO V65 V2 comes with the option to be configured using VIA. With VIA, users can quickly create macros and remap the keyboard layout to their liking. These changes take place instantly with no need to flash and are stored on the keyboard itself, so there’s no need to download software to use it while at work.

I was used to more mainstream software interfaces like Razer's Synapse, so did have a slight learning curve as I got used to the software. However, once I was able to wrap my head around it, it became straightforward and easy to use. By utilizing additional layers, I was able to assign new functions to keys, such as using FN and Enter as the print screen button.

Final Thoughts

The  CIDOO V65 V2 is a high-quality and versatile mechanical keyboard that offers an excellent typing and gaming experience. Its gasket-mounted design, Quake Matte Linear switches, and PORON foam layer contribute to a satisfying and responsive feel, while its Bluetooth connectivity and VIA support make it highly adaptable to various setups and preferences. Retro Dye-Sublimation PBT Keycaps and polycarbonate plate also provide a durable and aesthetic touch to the keyboard. The keyboard's weight and premium build quality further enhance its stability and reliability, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking for a compact and reliable keyboard for work or play.
