The Human Story - Guild Wars 2 -

Human week is continuing on the Guild Wars 2 site with new lore released about the story of humans. In addition, the team has released a new video featuring the human race as well as a short interview with the dev team. Information from the team indicates that humans are a viable race to play and have advanced technologically, politically and have reduced their dependence on the Six Gods.

Q: How are humans in Guild Wars 2 different than humans in the original game?

Eric Flannum: The humans of Tyria at the time of Guild Wars 2 are more of a melting pot than they previously were. In the first game, the various human nations tended to keep themselves separate from each other. Many of these nations no longer exist or have undergone severe hardship in the 250 years since the first game. This has caused human nations that may have once been at war with one another, such as Kryta and Ascalon, to join together into a single nation. Players got to experience the very beginning of this trend in Guild Wars: Prophecies with the founding of the Ascalon Settlement in Kryta.

Bobby Stein: In the original Guild Wars, humans were dominant. Now they are under constant assault from hideous beasts. Even members of their own society covertly threaten their safety from inside the walls of their safe haven.

Q: If I create a human character in Guild Wars 2, what are some of the signature enemies and challenges I’ll experience?

Bobby Stein: Your choices irreversibly change your personal story. For example, if you decide to aid the city guard you may sacrifice your best friend in the process, or cause the veterans hospital to burn to the ground. It’s these tough decisions that will draw you deeper into the Guild Wars 2 human experience.

Jeff Grubb: The early human “bad guys” are the centaurs and the bandits. The former are old foes who have unified under new leaders that have come down out of the mountains and now seek to conquer the human territories. The latter are opportunists who put their own profit ahead of the survival of the last human nation. They chip away at the foundations of human society, raiding the farmers and townsfolk. These are not the only foes you’ll see as a human (it is a big, dangerous world), but they are the main focus of attention, and they keep the humans from addressing greater issues which threaten all the races.
