Early Access to Throne and Liberty is over, and those who didn’t want to pay for a head start are finally starting their journey in the new MMORPG. If you were willing to wait for the official launch on Tuesday, October 1st, chances are you didn’t spend countless hours gathering intelligence on every game mechanic in order to get the most out of your first few days in the world of Solisium.
Even so, you still deserve to get off to a good start in Throne and Liberty as you attempt to catch up with the head start gang. That’s why we have taken the time to do some of the homework and compiled a list of Throne and Liberty beginner tips and tricks to help you get a quick start.
Pick The Right Weapons
In Throne and Liberty, you don’t choose a set class for your character. Instead, your weapons determine what skills you have available and what role your character will play. A character can have a primary and secondary weapon equipped at all times, and players can freely swap between weapons at any time, effectively changing the role that they will perform while in a group.
There will always be a “best build” in any MMO, but we aren’t going to worry about that here. All of the weapons in T&L come with some powerful skills, so your choice of weapon will probably depend upon the type of playstyle you enjoy. That said, some weapon pairs will have better synergy. Look for weapons that utilize the same stats to maximize your damage, or choose weapons that offer different abilities, such as the Greatsword’s melee skills and the Bow’s ranged powers.
Join A Guild
Throne and Liberty is an MMO, so joining a guild should be a no-brainer for anyone planning to focus on group content and PvP. Guild group content includes Castle Siege, Conquest Battles, Guild Raids, and other dynamic events.
Many people prefer to play solo, so joining a guild may not be a high priority. Still, even solo-focused players will want to find a guild as soon as possible to reap the benefits beyond just having someone to group with. When you complete a Guild Contract or donate to the Guild, you earn Guild Coins. These coins can be used at the Guild Merchant to purchase consumables. These have daily or weekly limits, so just a little time and effort will net you some valuable loot. Guilds also provide helpful buffs and skills. Buffs include EXP boosts, mana regen increases, and increased Sollant gain, to name a few.
Watch The Weather
More than just an environmental aesthetic, weather plays a vital role in Throne and Liberty. Specific areas can be blocked due to high water levels during rain periods. More importantly, rain can also affect some skills. While it is raining, monsters will acquire the Wet debuff, increasing the damage and area of effect of electricity-based skills.
Like rain, wind can also affect your fighting skills. Both crossbows and bows are affected by wind strength and direction. Shooting into a headwind will reduce your character’s range while shooting with a tailwind will increase the distance your arrows and bolts will travel. Out of combat, wind will also affect the distance you can travel with a Glide Morph.
Maximize Your Experience Gain
If you waited until the official launch of Throne and Liberty, you have some work ahead of you to catch up with the early access crowd. Whether you are playing as a casual or skipping sleep to go at it hardcore, you’ll want to maximize your experience points as you level up your character.
- Killing a monster with a big hit will grant you Power Hit Experience. The more damage your final blow deals, the more bonus experience you will gain. Save your biggest hit for when the monster is near death, then unleash a powerful hit for some extra XP.
- In public areas, monsters with gray names and health bars mean the mob has already been “claimed” by another player. You can always lend a helping hand, but all loot and XP from the mob will go to the player (or group) that dealt the first blow. If you want to maximize your XP per hour, make sure you are going after unclaimed monsters.
- Many MMOs require you to grind monster kills to gain experience when your quest list runs dry before you hit the next level. You can still grind mobs in T&L, but there are far better ways to level up your character. Make sure to complete all three portions of your Codex - Adventure, Exploration, and Collection - to gain the experience you need to hit level 50 as quickly as possible.
- Eat food to gain stat boosts that will help you kill monsters faster. To further expedite your monster kills and quest completions, be sure to equip Stellarite for an additional 10% damage bonus. Stellarite is consumed at a rapid pace, so make sure you stop by the merchant before heading out on quests.
Open-World Dungeons - Be Afraid Of The Dark
Open-world dungeons are public instances where solo players or groups can freely enter or leave. During the day, open-world dungeons are PvE-only zones that are great for gaining some extra experience and gear. However, the rules change at night. The entrance is locked, and the dungeon becomes PvP free for all. Solo players and the unaware will quickly be hunted down and killed by roaming groups of PKillers.
Optimize Your Camera Settings
When you start up Throne and Liberty for the first time, you are asked whether you want to play in Classic or Action Mode. Action Mode links your character and camera movement. You move your mouse to change the camera view, with your character turning to keep the camera at your back. Classic Mode is more like a classic MMO, where your camera remains in a fixed direction and must manually be rotated by holding the left or right mouse button as you move your mouse.
You may already know you can change your camera zoom in either mode with the scroll wheel on your mouse. But did you know you can gain further control of your camera in the Settings Menu? Just open the Settings Menu (Default: O), and click on the Camera tab to see all of your camera options.
All of the typical camera controls are here. Regardless of the control mode, you can change the camera’s rotation speed, invert horizontal and vertical input, and turn camera shake on or off. You can also enable (default) or disable camera smoothing. When enabled, there is a short delay before the character starts turning to face the camera while moving; when disabled, the character immediately faces the camera.
My favorite camera option is the ability to alter your character’s position on the screen. In its default position, your camera is directly behind the character, making it hard to see monsters and other objects directly in front of your character when you zoom in. In Throne and Liberty, you can change the horizontal and vertical position of your character. I personally move my character down and to the left so that my camera has an over-the-shoulder position similar to that found in most third-person shooters.
Take Your Time To Level Up
Racing to level 50 and beginning end-game activities will be the number one priority for many players, but Throne and Liberty can be rewarding for players who stop and smell the roses as they level up. Many players will skip everything other than the main story quests to get to level 50 so that they can start grinding high-level resources, but Throne and Liberty has a wide variety of side quests to complete, and the superb voice acting will keep you from spamming F to skip the story.
All of the optional activities available during leveling (blue side quests, dungeons, exploration objectives, etc.) will reward you with some bonus experience, but completing the main storyline will get you to max level all on its own. Besides taking in the story, the main reason to complete optional objectives is to gather extra gear and resources like crafting materials and weapon and armor growthstones.
Unlike many MMOs where your character outgrows their gear and acquires low-level resources that are no longer useful at higher levels, everything in you collect during your adventures will remain useful. Old weapons and armor can be sold for gold, but it can also be dismantled for components or sacrificed to enchant newer gear. Likewise, items like low-tier growthstones can be combined to create higher tier versions. This may not be as efficient as zerging to level 50 and farming high-tier items, but at least you are getting something useful for experiencing all that Throne and Liberty offers as you level up.
