Open IV Gets Small Update, Single Player Mods OK? Maybe... -

Fans of single player mods for Grand Theft Auto V who were dismayed to learn of Take-Two's decision to send a cease & desist order to the team behind Open IV, one of the most prominent modding tools for the game. The resulting furor over the revelation caused GTA V's Steam ratings to tumble after irate fans descended to express their displeasure. Over 56,000 "recent" reviews have resulted in an "overwhelmingly negative" rating.

According to Take-Two, the modding tool would "allow third parties to defeat security features of its software and modify that software in violation of Take-Two's rights".

Rockstar weighed in on the issue and had this to say:

Take-Two's actions were not specifically targeting single player mods. Unfortunately, OpenIV enables recent malicious mods that allow harassment of players and interfere with the GTA Online experience for everybody.  We are working to figure out how we can continue to support the creative community without negatively impacting our players.

Developer RockStar seemed willing, however, to find a way to work with the creative community regarding the creation and distribution of single player mods

Little has been said in the intervening days, but PC Gamer has posted a brief note that Open IV has a new update out in the wild, perhaps signaling a melting of the icy standoff.

While it is not a definitive that Open IV will still be viable as a single player mod creation tool, it appears that things are progressing.

What's your take on the whole issue?
