When several of our podcasters at Sitting on a Couch emailed me that Firefall was patching and going live in just a few months, I could only shake my head sadly at what I perceived would be an ill-fated first step. Then I saw the patch notes, and was blown away at the level of change that they were incorporating just before launch. Vertical scaling, simplified missions, ability unlocks at progression, and a full on end-game raid! Yes, Please!
I really liked Firefall last year when it went into open beta. But like everyone else, I saw the writing on the wall that Red 5 was having direction issues with the title, and it seemed like their MMO shooter would never quite make it out of the development seesaw it was consistently riding. Firefall was a game that didn’t seem to know what it wanted to be.
Hopping back into Firefall's long-awaited relaunch, I noticed right away that they added a new tutorial. This one shows off and explains some of the various suits and then thrusts you into your first combat mission. It won’t take long but it is only here to teach you the basics before you are tasked with some more advanced missions. Slowly nudging you to start the campaign.
In the battle of the two big MMOFPS titles coming our way soon, Firefall is the one that has a great focus on cooperative PvE experience as much as it does on PvP and the eSports experiences. In our latest Firefall column, we take a look at that phenomenon and offer a few thoughts. Check it out!
