Creating a Boss from Start to Finish

Creating a Boss from Start to Finish -

The Final Fantasy XIV site has a neat new developer blog that details the creation of a dungeon boss from early concept through rendering and on into the game. Rofocale is the third boss in the Royal City of Rabanastre who rides atop an odd looking chariot. To say "don't get trampled" is an understatement.

The blog shows off a great deal of art from the earliest concepts through sculpted models, digital drawings and 3D models.

When creating monsters in FFXIV, we don't actually use the sculpted models in-game. We create a texture-like object called a normal map based on these sculpted models. Next, we apply this normal map to a different, low-polygon model of the monster. This way we are able to maintain the number of polygons used, while adding more details, such as the textures and bumps to an object.
