As announced a year ago and periodically since then, both the XBox 360 and PlayStation 2 versions of Final Fantasy XI will end service at 7:00 am Pacific / 10:00 am Eastern today, Thursday, March 31st. PC service for the game will continue and players of the soon-defunct versions of FFXI can convert their account in order to continue playing.
Square Enix is sending out emails to players to remind them of the forthcoming closure of Final Fantasy XI on March 31, 2016 for both PlayStation 2 and XBox.
As the inevitable road to March 2016 when Square Enix will shutter the doors of Final Fantasy XI for consoles stretches ahead, long time players and fans have one last chance to bid the beloved MMO adieu. Today marks the release of the final story arc of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel that brings FFXI on consoles to an end, though the PC version will continue to run.
Square Enix is inviting former Final Fantasy XI players back from May 15-25 to take part in the final storyline for the iconic game. Earlier this year, Squenix announced the last series of updates to the game titled Rhapsodies of Vana'diel. From now through May 11th, players can earn an item in the Assault - Nyzul Isle Uncharted Area Survey campaign after which the Additional Seal Battlefield Spoils will run through May 30th.
Kotaku is reporting that a mobile version of Final Fantasy XI is set for a 2016 release, with beta testing ready to get underway later this spring. Set in Vana'diel, the mobile version is being co-developed by Square Enix and Nexon.
The Final Fantasy XI forum has been updated with the news that new NPC-run factions will be entering the game as part of the Unity Concord system that will be launching in game soon. Players will be able to find and support their favorite NPC's cause. Players will be able to chat in a special Unity chat room, run faction-specific content and much more.
The Final Fantasy XI forum has a new post with that takes a look at the forthcoming August update set to launch on August 12th. In it, players are informed that the Seekers of Adoulin missions are coming to a close and hints are dropped about cryptic alluvion skirmishes that send players into an ever-changing labyrinth. Additionally, new weapons are being added as well as weapon sets.
Just because a game is over a decade old doesn't mean that there's nothing new it brings to the table. Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XI players will see some new quest content entering the game via the June version update.
Square Enix isn't finished with Final Fantasy XI, at least according to the huge update just released. The patch includes tons of new content in the form of quests, missions, a completely new zone, recipes and much more. Some 'nuts and bolts' changes that are sure to please players are things such as the amount of lost XP for being knocked out has been reduled, taxes on bazaars have been abolished and listing fees for items on the Auction House have been lowered.

Most enticingly, players can download the Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition for free from now through December 23rd to give them a jump start back into the game.
Final Fantasy XI is celebrating its anniversary with a series of events happening from today through November 25th. Players can expect increased drop rates, double salvage plan drops and much, much more.
Final Fantasy XI is celebrating its eleventh anniversary. As part of the celebration, players can now download three of the game's battle area add-ons: Vision of Abyssea," "Scars of Abyssea" and "Heroes of Abyssea". The downloads are free to anyone who has yet to try out Final Fantasy XI.
