Magic: The Gathering's next set, Foundations, is more than just some new cards; it's one of the largest initiatives to onboard new players the game has seen in some time. One of the major tenets of that initiative is the Beginner's Box, which walks players through the game step-by-step through 10 pre-made decks of 20 cards each.
Today, we're going to reveal every card in the Inferno deck, a mono-red deck focused on one of Magic's most tenured creature types: Dragons! This deck is all about the fire-breathing beasts, and it goes a long way in teaching how mono-red decks are all about wreaking as much havoc as possible.
The entire decklist – along with a few tips on how each of the cards can help you to victory – is below.
- Terror of Mount Velus (Creature – Dragon)
- Costs five generic and two red mana to cast
- 5 power/5 toughness
- Flying, double strike
- Ability: When this creature enters, creatures you control gain double strike until end of turn.
This is the game-ender; if this big ol' dragon hits the battlefield, your opponent is headed to a quick defeat. It's one thing that this Terror itself has double strike – which allows it to cause combat damage twice per turn – but it being able to give it to the rest of the creatures on your side of the table is absurd.
- Fiery Annihilation (Instant)
- Costs two generic and one red mana to cast
- Fiery Annihilation deals 5 damage to target creature. Exile up to one target Equipment attached to that creature. If that creature would die this turn, exile it instead.
Need to clear the way for your creatures to deal some damage to your opponent? Employ some Fiery Annihilation and you can take one of your opponent's beefier creatures out of the equation. The ability to remove an Equipment from the game as well is just the icing on the cake.
- Firespitter Whelp (Creature – Dragon)
- Costs two generic and one red mana to cast
- 2 power/2 toughness
- Flying
- Whenever you cast a noncreature or Dragon spell, this creature deals 1 damage to each opponent.
Firespitter Whelp seems pretty innocuous on the surface – a 2/2 dragon doesn't usually earn much confidence. However, that ability cannot be understated; chipping away from each opponent's health just by playing the game adds up in a hurry.
- Carnelian Orb of Dragonkind (Artifact)
- Costs two generic and one red mana to cast
- Tap this card to add one red mana to your mana pool. If that mana is spent on a Dragon creature spell, it gains haste until end of turn.
Remember earlier, when we talked about Terror of Mount Velus giving your entire board double strike? Well, if you cast the Terror with this card involved, the big dragon can join in the beatdown too. That applies to every dragon in the deck as well, which makes this a big part of the strategy.
- Dragonlord's Servant (Creature - Goblin Shaman)
- Costs one generic and one red mana to cast
- 1 power/3 toughness
- Ability: Dragon spells you cast cost 1 generic mana less to cast.
Dragonlord's Servant is the type of creature that isn't coming into play to attack. Rather, the Servant simply needs to stay alive, as it'll let you summon your biggest dragons one turn earlier. The Terror of Mount Velus is dangerous as is; now imagine it coming down on turn six. That's some powerful stuff.
- Fire Elemental (Creature - Elemental)
- Costs three generic and two red mana to cast
- 5 power/4 toughness
Here we have a great example of a "vanilla" creature, or a creature that has no singular ability other than attacking or blocking. Not much more to it than turning it sideways whenever possible.
- Kargan Dragonrider (Creature - Human Warrior)
- Costs one generic and one red mana to cast
- 2 power/2 toughness
- Ability: As long as you control a Dragon, this creature has flying.
This card does a great job of teaching a new player how evasion works in Magic: The Gathering. When it first hits the battlefield, it's a simple 2/2 for two mana. However, if you then cast a Dragon on turn three – for example, the Firespitter Whelp mentioned earlier – suddenly this Dragonrider can't be blocked by a non-flying creature. Keep this in mind while playing.
- Rapacious Dragon (Creature – Dragon)
- Costs four generic and one red mana to cast
- 3 power/3 toughness
- Flying
- Abliilty: When this creature enters, create two Treasure tokens.
- Treasure tokens are artifacts that can be tapped and sacrificed to creature one mana of any color.
Rapacious Dragon is the Inferno deck's "ramp" example, as it immediately generates two additional mana resources – even though the new resources are one-time-use only. You can either use them immediately for a smaller creature, or wait a turn and bring out a big hitter two full turns early.
- Scorching Dragonfire (Instant)
- Costs one generic and one red mana to cast
- Scorching Dragonfire deals 3 damage to target creature or planeswalker. If that creature or planeswalker would die, exile it instead.
Targeted removal is one of the most satisfying plays in all of Magic. This one card can remove a body from your opponent's board immediately, and then that body can't come back thanks to the exile clause. Save this one for the right moment and send that annoying creature back where it came from.
- Seize The Spoils (Sorcery)
- Costs two generic and one red mana to cast
- As an additional cost to cast this spell, discard a card.
- Draw two cards and create a Treasure token.
Sure, you'll have to send a card to the graveyard in order to use Seize The Spoils, but then you get to immediately draw two cards and create a Treasure token for a mana advantage? What's not to like?
- Skyraker Giant (Creature - Giant)
- Costs two generic and two red mana to cast
- 4 power/3 toughness
- Reach
- This creature can block creatures with flying.
A great use of an important keyword, Skyraker Giant highlights Reach, which takes care of flying creatures that may be annoying you.
- Uncharted Haven (Land)
- This land enters tapped. As it enters, choose a color.
- Tap this land to add one mana of any color.
- Mountain (Basic Land – Mountain)
- There are eight Mountains in the deck
Finally, we have the mana base for the deck, which includes eight basic Mountains – which generate red mana only – as well as Uncharted Haven, a nonbasic land that can create a mana of any color, even though it cannot do so on the turn it comes into play. These nine cards will be what you use to pay for every other card in the deck, so be sure to play them all as they enter your hand!
