Survival Mode is Coming to Fallout 76 Next Week & Here's a Preview

The Bethesda Blog has been updated with a new Fallout 76 article to preview Survival Mode that will be present in the game starting March 26th. This is a separate game mode from the main game and features much fewer PvP restrictions. In addition, there will be scoreboards so players can keep track of their kill streaks and weekly challenges that will award "legendary rewards".

When a player enters the game, they will choose between Adventure Mode or Survival Beta. Adventure Mode will have reduced damage inflicted on players by other players they are not hostile with. Survival Mode changes up PvP combat, death and respawn mechanics and offers players a +20% bonus to XP.

While in Survival Mode, players can continue their journey through the game, though they can be attacked by other players and vice versa. The only time other players will appear on the map is if they are "Wanted" or in the top 3 on the Longest Life" scoreboard. Players will score 2x Caps for every kill and the defeated player will drop "all of their junk as well as a random amount of the aid items they were carrying". These things can be looted by anyone in the area.

Other components of Survival Mode include:

  • weapons are more deadly, though one-shot mechanics have been limited
  • one Stimpack of each type can be active at any time
  • respawn is only at one's CAMP or at Vault 76 or a train station
  • Fast Travel is limited to CAMP, Vault 76 or a train station or a workshop under a player's control
  • Scoreboards will be active for: Player Kills, Longest Life, XP Gained, Events Completed, Enemies Killed, Bounty Collected, Time Wanted and Workshops Claimed
  • each week will see players earn Legendary items for completing challenges - the first 6 weeks' items are profiled in the blog

Adventure mode will see some changes as well:

Once the Survival Beta is live, we’re making a change to reduce all damage that would be dealt to you by players you are not currently hostile with to zero. This adjustment effectively eliminates “slap damage” and should greatly reduce the likelihood that you’ll fall victim to any unwanted PVP.

However, there are some exceptions. For example, if you have pacifist mode disabled and return fire against another player you will become hostile toward them, meaning you will then take full damage from their attacks. Additionally, attempting to claim another player’s Workshop, or having someone else contest your own will open you up to hostility with that player. You can also still take damage from environmental hazards that may have been caused by another player, such as a car exploding.
