Bethesda Would Like Crossplay but 'Sony Is Not as Helpful As Everyone Would Like'

According to Bethesda's Todd Howard, the company would love to feature true cross platform gameplay in Fallout 76. "You cannot do crossplay in 76. We'd really love that (crossplay) but right now we can't. Sony is not as helpful as everyone would like." Howard told German site GameStar.de (via CNet).

Howard's words come on the heels of recent backlash at Sony for causing issues with crossplay between the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch. It was revealed in June that Switch players who had already activated a Fortnite account for PS4 could not transfer and use the same account on Switch but would instead be required to create a new one.

Sony Interactive Entertainment of America's Shawn Layden told Eurogamer, "We're hearing it. We're looking at a lot of the possibilities. You can imagine that the circumstances around that affect a lot more than just one game. I'm confident we'll get to a solution which will be understood and accepted by our gaming community, while at the same time supporting our business."

Sony has been under fire from several game companies in the last several years for its reluctance to open up crossplay opportunities between PS4 and other platforms. Games and companies that have taken issue with Sony include Microsoft via a recent Minecraft ad; Nintendo for the Fortnite Switch issue mentioned above; Rocket League; and now Bethesda.

The question remains when Sony will finally capitulate and join the rest of the gaming world in supporting multiplatform crossplay.
