Empire Echoes: Farming

Robc writes about farming in the latest Empire Echoes:
Ever heard of the FFA? It's a rural kid's program in the United States called the Future Farmers of America, kind of like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. The kids raise livestock all by themselves and do other activities to improve their skill on the ranch or farm. Farming in a MMORPG is not nearly as much fun, or is it?

Whether you consider it fun or a chore, farming for cash seems to have become an important part of most MMORPGS. As a frequent solo player I find myself farming mobs all the time. There have been games where I desperately needed the cash, Shadowbane for example. I was quickly promoted to an officer in the remnants of a large guild that had essentially disintegrated. We had this huge city and all these buildings to try and keep afloat and farming was crucial to get the funds to stay alive. In Horizons I was a grunt in a small guild with aspirations to grow and take over the world... farming for materials to build the guild halls, shops, and other buildings was established as a high priority by the leadership. In FFXI, I find myself farming to afford the exorbitant price of higher level spells. When I go back through all of the games I have played, I find that I really have farmed a lot! Perhaps I should form a guild for DE called the Future Farmers of Fortitude (FFF)?
