Who Are the Guardians? - Game Anatomy: Destiny

In Destiny we play as the Guardians, protecting the Solar System from the impending Darkness and any threat that may seek to destroy the free peoples of the Galaxy. But who are the Guardians and where did they come from? Hey, everyone, my name is Sam, also known as MrStainless and this is Game Anatomy; a series where I dissect the lore and give you the lowdown on our favorite games, and today we?re delving deep into the lore of Destiny.

Sent out by the ominous Traveller, Guardians are chosen by Ghosts. What do the Ghosts look for in a prospective Guardian? Well more often than not…you?ve got to be dead first! The Ghosts look at your past life, look at how you lived and how you fought to save humanity before eventually being cut down, not only that but they also decipher whether you would be compatible with the Ghost that found you. If deemed worthy you?ll be resurrected.

Given an array of advanced weaponry, vehicles and armor the Guardians are then tasked with continuing to fight for the survival and safety of the Solar System once more. In Destiny the Guardians consist of three different races; Humans, Awoken and Exo?s. Humans, of course, are humans. Awoken are humans who, during the Collapse, tried to escape the Darkness by running to the edges of known space. While there, something happened that altered them forever, changing the color of their skin and their appearance. Most of the Awoken live in the Reef but of course, others live on Earth too. Finally, we have the Exo?s, self-aware war machines built by humanity during the Golden Age for a war long forgotten, they were rebooted during the collapse and remember nothing of their original purpose. The Exo?s now coexist with their more organic fellow citizens.

But how did the Guardians come to prominence?

Well during a period called the Dark Age that followed an event called the Collapse, Guardians were known as The Risen (which makes sense given how Guardians are resurrected) but they lacked a common purpose, they didn?t know what it truly meant to be Risen and to have this gift of near immortality. To that end the Risen took on jobs as enforcers, bodyguards, some worked for Factions that would go on to become the groups that forged the Last City. These Factions quickly began to war with each other, fighting for influence and power, this petty squabbling led some of the Risen in their employ to simply leave and seek a higher purpose. This petty squabbling between the factions ultimately led to the Faction Wars, a violent period of conflict that ended partly due to the emergence of the Fallen. These factions came together to repel the Fallen, they congregated under the protection of the Traveler, founded the Last City and became known as Guardians.

Of course, outside of the Last City, there were Guardians who set themselves up as Warlords, taking power where they could get it but that could be a story for another lore piece. In the meantime, the Guardians protected the free people of the Solar System until they were thrown into disarray after the Last City was destroyed by Red Legion commander Dominus Ghaul.

So folks there you have it, that is a very abridged, simplified history on the creation and rise of the Guardians in the Destiny Universe if there?s an aspect of Destiny lore you?d love to know more about let me know down in the comments.
