Hybrid Server Hosting Revealed During In-House Interview

In the This Week at Bungie newsletter, Engineering Lead Matt Segur took time for an in-house interview regarding how Destiny 2 games will be hosted. Segur wants to move away from what he believe is the somewhat restrictive term "dedicated servers" to the broader "hybrid model of client-server and peer-to-peer technology".

Segur starts by saying that "every activity in Destiny 2 is hosted by one of our servers" and reassures players that they won't suffer server migration should a host leave the game for one reason or another. He further explains that "every activity in Destiny 2 is hosted by one of our servers" which, of course, seems to indicate that there are dedicated servers.

Segur clarified:

Wait, so we do have dedicated servers?

Matt: We don't use that term, because in the gaming community, “dedicated servers” refers to pure client-server networking models. Destiny 2 uses a hybrid of client-server and peer-to-peer technology, just like Destiny 1. The server is authoritative over how the game progresses, and each player is authoritative over their own movement and abilities. This allows us to give players the feeling of immediacy in all their moving and shooting – no matter where they live and no matter whom they choose to play with.

The interview continues with Segur speaking about how the team is dedicated to ensuring that adequate software is being put into place for PC users to ensure that hacking and cheating is not present in the game.
