Big Changes Incoming, 2018 Plans Revealed, Season Content Free to All -

The latest Bungie development update has been published, this time penned by Game Director Christopher Barrett. The letter details a number of immediate changes coming to the game, as well as outlines more long term goals for D2 overall.

Barrett begins the discussion by distinguishing between expansions  and seasons. Expansions are, as expected, content including Story, Destinations, Gear, Crucible, Strike and Raid Lairs. These must be purchased to access the new content. By contrast, Seasons are free updates to all players.

Going forward, Iron Banner, Faction Rallies and rewards will be part of Season 2 and available for everyone. Seasonal rewards from these activities will also be available to everyone.

With regard to Eververse, the game's in-game shop:

We recognize that the scales are tipped too far towards Tess at the moment, and Eververse was never intended to be a substitute for end game content and rewards. So, we’ll be making three changes for upcoming Seasons:

  • We’re shifting the balance of new content in favor of activity rewards over Bright Engrams. This includes adding Ghosts, Sparrows, and ships (to date found only in Bright Engrams) to achievement reward pools.
  • We'll provide a gameplay path to earn Bright Engrams and all contained rewards (including Event Engrams).
  • We’ll give players more direct purchase options and make adjustments to Bright Engrams to allow players to get the items they want more often.

Bungie is working changes to how XP is earned, but will be forthcoming with any changes with the goals of consistency and transparency in how XP is being gathered. The team recognizes that too much XP is earned "through grinding specific activities which is "not a fun grind".

Details are also revealed about three forthcoming updates on January 30th, in February and one in Spring 2018.

  • January: Armor will be included in the Masterwork system with damage reduction while in Super. Masterwork Armor will have the reroll function added as well as the ability to upgrade items. Raid rewards will be overhauled as well
  • February: Improvements to Strike Scoring; armor and weapons mods will be reworked; quickplay improvements will be added, PC text chat for the Tower will be added; reduction to exotic repetition and fireteam members will be displayed on the map
  • Spring: New content will be delivered in the following categories: Crucible Rank, Private Matches, 6v6 playlist; Mayhem Events will come back as limited time events

The letter ends with a promise that fans and players will be hearing much more from Bungie:

Expect to hear more from us via, Twitch, and social media. We’ll be talking to you more directly, and more often, as promised. We want to thank our community for all the passionate and detailed feedback you provide. It’s critical to our ability to continually improve Destiny, so thank you!
