fetarnox writes: I wrote this review for two reasons. The first one is to say how extraordinary a game this is. It virtually defined the fantasy MMO genre, along with the first Everquest. And even though it is a decade old game, it still feels quite playable...since many of the more contemporary MMO franchises stole so many ideas from Mythic when tasked with defining the next generation MMO. The second reason for writing this review is to steer people away from making the same mistake I made a few days back. Yes, what a dummy I am: I went online in search of all the expansions to DAOC so as to reinstall the full game, and start playing it again. After initial reinstall (and, thus, paying about fifty dollars for all the expansions) the CD key window came up, after which I prompted the program to do a file check, and a download of all the latest patches. Well, Mythic must use a different web address these days for their patching...because it kept stalling, and then telling me there was an error with the download address. Long story short, I finally decided to go to EA's website to see if there was an alternative method of installation, which there is. I downloaded, enabled a 14 day free trial that I thought would save me a little money, and started playing. After a day or so, I decided to subscribe, both because I was thoroughly satisfied with the game...and because I wanted to try out the Eldritch class (which choice requires one to be a member to unlock it). I got to the membership services page of EAs website, and slowly drew an ugly face. I could not enter my game key codes...the ones I spent close to fifty dollars to acquire. What's more, I didn't need to. All of the expansions are free for anyone who joins during this 14-day trial period that they are providing new members with right now. In other words, I paid 50 dollars for 6 key codes that I never needed in the first place. All that you need to do is go the full game (a game many have been enticed to spend hundreds of dollars on over the years) and start playing. If you like the game, you get all this software free...all you have to do is pay the subscription fee when the 14 days is up. My only complaint is that I wish I had known this was taking place before I had pulled out my slim lil' money roll and started counting bills out. So a word to the wise, don't be silly like me...don't buy this software on Amazon. It is all yours for free. Nevertheless, it is a great game...and everyone who has ever been into the fantasy MMO genre should definitely try this one out...for free no less! Wed Nov 14 2012 5:43PM
