Crowfall Articles
Testers jumping into this super early phase of the game can get a taste of the skill system that will, in some form or another, show up at launch. It’s this skill system where the SWG’s influence is most felt, followed shortly by Crowfall’s plans for crafting. What was once an entire class, whose tree required job specific experience to level a profession, takes form in passively trained passive skills.
My time in Crowfall has been limited to harvesting, crafting, and fooling around in the Eternal Kingdom building. Writing about harvesting and crafting is fairly moot however with the drastic changes coming to harvesting in 5.3. Crowfall’s harvesting quickly leveled up from a standard MMO doldrum activity to resource gathering that will be interactive and have diverse play styles.
Fresh back from hiatus, Red Thomas makes a trip to Austin, TX and catches up with the Crowfall team. Persistence is the watch word of the day, and Red finds plenty of reasons to be excited about development since his last visit.
This month’s live Q&A focused on harvesting and some quality of life changes to power loadouts. There are some other tidbits about upcoming features but the main focus of the Q&A was to discuss the new survival toolbar (referred to frequently as the harvesting bar).
In 2008 the MMORPG world was graced with Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. Like Crowfall, WAR had been highly anticipated prior to release and was offering up some very innovative ideas, many of which were highlighted in charismatic updates by Paul Barnett. Being a spiritual successor to Dark Age of Camelot, WAR was often spoken of with elation among members of the DAoC playerbase who saw it as an opportunity to reinvent the revolutionary systems of its antiquated predecessor.
The Crowfall team recently wrapped up a busy outing at Gamescom 2017 where they discussed many of the recent updates to the game including castle building, skill trees, and art improvements. The big highlight came near the end of the conference with the reveal of a new trailer in which we see an unnamed women telling the story of her many lives in the Crowfall universe, that of soldier, villain, and hero.
We have been following Crowfall from the beginning even before the game was officially announced. We got to see some of the design ideas and meet in person with the team before the Kickstarter. Now here we are with Gamescom this week and the team is attending a big game show and showing off a lot of great material. For MMO players this is a very exciting time coming into the ideas and philosophy that Crowfall brings to the table.
Crowfall lead men, Gordon Walton and Todd Coleman, take some time to talk with Red Thomas about their progress over the last month, what backers should see in the near future, and they answer some reader questions.
Red Thomas, renowned explorer of Texas eateries, took time off from a recent expedition through the Texas Hill Country, to visit with the Crowfall developers in Austin. His time with Generals Todd Coleman and Gordon Walton revealed interesting intelligence about the team’s pending operations.
While in Austin, Red Thomas stopped in to see Gordon Walton and Todd Coleman about their game Crowfall. With recent patches adding multiple unique servers, the project seems to be on the cusp of persistence!
Red Thomas puts on his business hat to explore Title III of the JOBS Act, which now allows investments under a crowdfunding type of platform. Learn what you need to know and whether it’s good for the industry!
Having an interview with Todd Coleman and Gordon Walton (co-founders of Artcraft Entertainment) about the recent IndieGoGo/Microventures funding news is a bit hard. You see, by the basic rules and laws put forth by the government, there’s not a whole lot they can discuss in detail about the investment setup. But they can talk about why IndieGoGo, and how things are going with Crowfall, so that’s just what we did…
ArtCraft recently revealed some interesting news about the Eternal Kingdoms (or EK) by announcing their Parcel Builder Tool. For those unfamiliar, each player in Crowfall will serve as the monarch of their own personal EK. These zone-sized worlds serve as permanent and persistent home bases that can be customised, built and serve as social/economic hubs.
Dr. Frankenstein is the title character from Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel who, after studying the decay of living beings, assembled a humanoid creature comprised of a various collection of human remains. Talk about a gruesome crafting profession! Leave it to the folks at ArtCraft to say, “I think we’ll include that.” Yep, it’s in Crowfall and it’s a crafting profession called Necromancy.
For example, I’ve always enjoyed the Star Wars bonus videos that talk about how George Lucas found the inspiration for the films, how difficult the original movie was to make and the large number of creative and technical changes it went through. It’s hard to imagine Star Wars with Luke Skywalker as a 65 year-old general or Han Solo as an alien with green skin and gills - but it could have happened.
