Number 5: Guild Wars 2
No doubt a contentious pick, but we feel ArenaNet’s insanely hyped (and massively successful) 2012 MMORPG release deserves its place on our list. Not only is the game one of the highest selling MMORPGs of all time, but it also stands as one of the highest rated by media and fans alike. And while it’s hard to imagine it’ll ever reach the lofty grounds of buzz it had around launch, the fact remains that GW2 has done more to keep the MMO genre afloat than most games in recent years.
Number 4: EVE Online
EVE is in a class of its own. The hallmark of a small game that can catapult a studio to great heights, CCP’s seminal space MMORPG is something of an anomaly. Its single-shard technology where one server can host all players is something other studios are only now catching up to. Its political and guild-based warfare have had actual history books written about them. In short, without EVE, many other MMOs wouldn’t exist. But that honor extends even more to our top 3 games.
