The 10 Best Cancelled MMOs of All Time

3 - Asheron’s Call

Asheron’s Call was an MMORPG set in the world of Dereth, a heroic fantasy setting of medieval influences, familiar and unfamiliar creatures, and over 500 square miles of virtual world to explore and adventure in.

Players enter the world of Dereth on the planet Auberean as Aluvian, Gharu'ndim, Sho, Viamontian, Shadow (Umbraen and Penumbraen), Gear Knight, or Undead race. AC disregards specific classes by allowing the player to choose what skills to develop, thereby creating the type of character they want to play. AC fore goes dividing the world up into zones, creating one huge seamless world where thousands of gamers may exist in the realm at the same time.

2 - City of Heroes

City of Heroes was a premier free-to-play MMORPG from the game companies NCSoft, Paragon Studios, and Cryptic Studios, and holds the distinction of being the first super-hero MMORPG. Players could enter Paragon City or the Rogue Isles and create a hero or villain from 10 archetypes, add Powers from a list of over 40 primary and sub classes, then set about questing to rise to the top of the hero or villain hierarchy. They could meet and fight alongside many signature heroes and villains, including Statesman, Lord Recluse, Sister Psyche, Scirocco, and others. Players could also ally themselves with other heroes and villains and build their own super Base of operations. They could also use the Mission Architect to create and share adventures. The game was shut down in November of 2012.

1 - Star Wars Galaxies

Star Wars Galaxies was a sci-fi MMORPG from Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts initially released as Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided. The game world consisted of several different planets borrowed from the fictional Star Wars universe with a timeline set between the Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back movies. During character creation, players could choose from ten different species and nine different primary professions, all of which were mentioned in various Star Wars media.

Players of Star Wars Galaxies could use their characters' skills and special abilities to attack targets, complete quests/missions, craft useful items, and/or entertain other players. The game offered the opportunity for players to meet famous Star Wars NPCs, travel in their own landspeeders, speeder bikes and swoops, control economies, earn fame and fortune (or infamy and notoriety), obtain rare items, artifacts and trinkets, and build, own and decorate their own structures, including houses, cantinas and guild halls. These structures could even be organized into entire cities run by players. The game received several expansions since its initial release, including Jump to Lightspeed, Rage of the Wookies, and Trials of Obi-Wan, all of which added additional features to the main game. These expansions were followed by the introduction of a trading card game in an update called Champions of the Force, with its own subsequent expansions. Star Wars Galaxies was shut down in December of 2011.
