Peeking in on the Veil

Earlier this year a number of MMORPGs competed for your backer dollars and a few of them were successfully funded. One such game is Camelot Unchained by City State Entertainment. This week we are going to peek in on CSE and see what they have been up to these past few months.

In early October CSE started a series of Question and Answer sessions titled Piercing the Veil (PtV). They have conducted two of these sessions so far. During the first PtV the first serious question discussed guild alliances. We found out that guilds will formally be able to enter into alliances with other guilds. This will allow for easier group formation and intel sharing between the members of your realm.

We also found out a number of things are still up for debate, one of which I assumed was set in stone. The names of the realms are stilling being finalized. While chances are we will see them stay the Arthurians, Vikings, and Tuatha de Dannan, Mark Jacobs talked about how he was still taking into consideration the founders thoughts on this subject. When asked if every class would have multiple specs the community manager responded with a duck, roll, and dodge. We did find out that the forums will be given a revamp and that players will be able to upgrade their pledge tier. In order for players to upgrade their pledges, however, the PayPal system will need to be re-implemented. In order to start the PayPal system back up the name of the game should be finalized. Because of this we could know the final name of the game by the end of the year.

During PtV 2, the over-sexualization of avatars was one of the first topics discussed. While CSE acknowledges that players enjoy character customization, pretty is only entertaining for so long. CSE promises to allow players to make characters that are unique to them but they will not be placing an emphasis on a boob or ab slider anytime soon. Those efforts will be better spent making a more expansive game with more substance.

One of my favorite questions had to deal with the background story of the game. Since PvP is the focus of the game, how does CSE plan on introducing the lore? This is going to be accomplished with out-of-game events such as stories by Mark Jacobs and crew known as Becoming Tales. They also plan to implement a Tome of Knowledge feature like what was present in Warhammer Online. While I really enjoyed the functionality of the ToK and look forward to seeing it in CU, hopefully they can figure out a way to get it working without causing the engine slowdowns it did in WAR.

While we did not learn anything groundbreaking over the past two Piercing the Veils, we can see some of the features start to take shape and the tone with which these Q&As will be handled in the future. CSE even took the time to answer off the wall questions involving the CSE duck mascot. While it is still early in production, I hope we start to see more concrete answers in the coming months. What kind of question would you like to see answered in future PtVs? Let us know in the comments below.
