No MMO can Please Everyone

Calling it as he sees it

Part of my job as a writer of FFXIV content on MMORPG.com is also to call things as I see them when I see them, and I feel that Wizardry also made an incidentally good point about how FFXIV is received.

Wizardry said the following, which I’ll quote verbatim but edit for readibility:

Same goes for FFXIV. I said it was not good enough before it was released; all those fanbois scoffed, called others haters, then game shuts down lol. They did NOT improve the game much at all, it really is the same EXACT game that most were saying was not good enough, just that fanbois looked for a reason to come back and give it a second try. I also came back to give it a second try but nope: same game, same mistakes.

Honestly, do we EVER hear a fanboy say anything is not right, no they say EVERYTHING is amazing like some cheap salesmen.

Nobody is saying FFXIV is utter trash. It is a great game it just does the core main things really bad and that fails the rest of the game that is good.

I’ve played FFXIV since 1.0 (as I’m sure some of you have as well), and while I can vouch for the changes to the game, I will also admit the functional similarity and feel of the game’s current combat system to its 1.0 form – the UI may be different, but the combat is, while much improved, the same deal.

Now, FFXIV does not have my favorite combat type (It ranks second to Black Desert, whose Korean server I’ve played on), but I personally love the game for the world it evokes and the story I get to experience. Were it not for the dungeon running stress I periodically retreat from, I’d call FFXIV home (and most likely buy a home in-game as well, if I could *throws salt*).

I think – and this isn’t a backhanded compliment – I appreciate the candor of Wizardry’s comments, even if there’s nothing in the world I could do to change the course of the game.

Conclusion

Pre-World of Warcraft boom, the audience of MMOs wasn’t as large as it is now. The audience of MMOs has grown tremendously with the growth of the Internet as a means of facilitating gamers with a playground to roam around in.

With that comes a ton of varying opinions, as well as many permutations of agreement and disagreement. While no MMO can please everyone, the best we can do to make sense of our own thoughts on a particular game – whether it’s a Final Fantasy Title or Tree of Savior (which I’m currently playing for review) – is to give an accurate assessment of a game’s features and then explain the reasons why a person likes that feature or not.

Whether we agree or disagree (or perhaps even agree to disagree), let’s all try to enjoy the games we love in a respectful manner.

In the meantime I promise to do the same – I’ll play games, tell you what I like and don’t like about them, and then we can all discuss and speculate  – for as long as you’ll have me. Speaking of things I don’t like, expect that if no major news breaks for FFXIV, I’ll be discussing the things I hate in FFXIV next time.

In the meantime, I’ll leave you with a late present: the FFXIV April Fool’s Joke video that got me laughing like heck: ChocoGo.  Cheers!
